Scholastic Notebook – 03/30/2012
March 30, 2012
The high school baseball season is young and maybe it still isn’t clear as to who are all the best teams are in each classification. But it is quite clear a team worth watching is in Class AAAA. Mount Lebanon. Through the first week of the season, Mount Lebanon just might be the biggest surprise. After all, the Blue Devils weren’t in the MSA Sports preseason top 10. They weren’t in the Post-Gazette top five, either. But heading into Friday, Mount Lebanon had a 3-1 record and had knocked off some of the big boys, namely three teams in the MSA top 10. Mount Lebanon started the season last Friday with a 7-4 victory against No. 5 Pine-Richland. The Blue Devils beat No. 8 North Allegheny, 9-6, on Tuesday. Yesterday, they knocked off No. 1-ranked and defending WPIAL champion Seneca Valley, 10-9.

March 24, 2012
The turnaround is complete.Zach Volzer scored with just 1:56 to play, lifting #6 Bethel Park (18-7-1) to  their historic 7th PIHL Penguins Cup title, defeating #5 Peters Township (15-6-3) 2-1 Saturday at CONSOL Energy Center. After starting the season 3-7-1, Bethel Park rattled off 15 straight wins, with many of them coming by only one goal. After a scoreless first period, Bethel Park would strike first, as Derek Lesnak would knock in his second goal of the postseason at the 4:40 mark of the second period, making it 1-0 Black Hawks.Peters Township would not wait long to respond, as Trevor Recktenwald would net his 4th goal of the playoffs, evening the score at 1-1.The score would remain ties until Volzer’s goal, as he would take a pass from Lesnak and riffle a shot by Indians’ goaltender Brian Baker, making it 2-1.That was all Bethel Park would need, fending off a furious attack in the final two minutes by Peters Township.

West Allegheny Works Overtime to Win PIHL AA Penguins Cup
Erie Cathedral Prep came into the PIHL Class AA Penguins Cup Championship red hot, as the Ramblers hadn’t lost a game since January. The only loss West Allegheny suffered since November 10th was at the hands of Cathedral Prep (5-0) on February 27th. The Indians were making their second appearance in the finals since 2010, when they were runner up to Latrobe. The Ramblers last captured the Penguins Cup in 1997. These two schools went back and forth in a great match for the AA title at the Consol Energy Center. It took some extra minutes to get the job down, but the wait was well worth it for West Allegheny as the Indians captured their first Penguins Cup.

Imhotep Charter Repeats as PIAA Class AA Boys Champs With Overtime Win Over Beaver Falls
Imhotep Charter claimed their second straight PIAA Boys Class AA title, but this time it wasn't easy. The Panthers defeated the Beaver Falls Tigers 56-54 in overtime at the Bryce Jordan Center. It's the third overall title and the second won in extra time, the Panthers need two extra sessions to defeat North Catholic in the 2009 championship game. It was a lot easier last year, the Panthers blew out Greensburg Central Catholic 67-34.Shakur Nesmith forced overtime with a steal and score with 19 seconds remaining. Coach Andre Noble said his kids could have given up at that point, but Nesmith read the trap right and was able to get the tying points. The Tigers had a chance to win it, but Sheldon Jeter missed a deep three.
