WPIAL Qualifiers for the 2013 PIAA Basketball Playoffs

Eight basketball games this weekend at the A.J. Palumbo Center and here on MSA Sports not only decided who went home with district gold, but it also decided which WPIAL teams and in what order will qualify for the PIAA Basketball Playoffs. Canon-McMillan Dominates WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships
Canon-McMillan continued its unforgettable season Saturday evening at Norwin High School as the Big Macs earned the team point championship, captured three individual gold medals, and advanced a total of seven wrestlers to next weekend’s state championship tournament in Hershey. The Big Macs have already shown they’re the top dual meet squad in the state and now appear poised to back it up, as Canon-McMillan will be the prohibitive favorite to be crowned the top team once again at the state individual tournament.In all, 42 wrestlers punched their tickets to Chocolate Town at the 78th annual WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships. The tournament also doubles as the PIAA Class AAA Southwest Regional state qualifier.

New Castle Masters Perfection as Canes Beat Hampton Again for WPIAL AAAA Gold

The third meeting of the year between New Castle and Hampton turned out to be like the first two. In fact, it turned out a lot like the previous 25 games for the defending Triple-A champs turned Quad-A beasts. The Red Hurricane rocked the Talbots with a big second quarter and rolled to a 68-53 victory Saturday night before a raucous crowd at Duqnuesne Univeristy's A.J. Palumbo Center.Things were quiet for the first two minutes of the game.  Scoreless, even.  Then, a Brandon Dominick three opened up the flood gates for New Castle.  Ryan Luther answered for Hampton, scoring his team’s first five points.  The Red Hurricane slowed things down to close out the quarter, and led 19-15 and the end of one.

Vincentian Girls too Wise for Serra in Girls Class A Basketball Championship
Vincentian girls basketball star Brenna Wise played in last year's WPIAL Class A Championship at 50% with an ankle injury. This year, she was 100%, and that was bad news for Serra Catholic.Wise scored 18 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked 4 shots, leading the Royals to their second Championship in as many years, defeating Serra 53-46 on Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Montour Comes back to Topple #1 Chartiers Valley in Boys AAA Finals
Trailing by nine points at the half, Montour turned up the heat on defense, holding Section 5 rival Chartiers Valley to 11 second half points en route to a 47-40 victory Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center at Duquesne University. The win gives Adam Kaufman and the Spartans their second WPIAL Class AAA championship in the last three years.Spencer Casson, Chartiers Valley’s 6’6” senior center, made his presence known from the start, opening up the scoring with what would be his first of three dunks in the first quarter.  Casson led the Colts through the first with 10 points and four rebounds.  Montour standout Devin Wilson was held to only two first quarter points, as the Spartans trailed 18-11 at the end of one.

Vincentian the New Royalty of Boys Class A Basketball
The Vincentian Academy Royals pulled away in the third quarter to claim their second WPIAL Class A Boys Basketball Championship with a 86-74 victory over the Clairton Bears on Friday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Royals are now 25-1 on the season and have won 14 straight since falling to District 6 top seed Bishop Carroll on January 12th.It was a balanced attack for the Royals. Five players ended in double figures with Junior Jim Kenna leading the way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Tony DiNardo added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.  Ryan Wolf scored 14, Jay Cortese came off the bench to score 11 and Kevin Fischer scored 10.

Bishop Canevin Pulls Stunner to Win Girls AA Basketball Championship
March 1, 2013
There is a new champion in Girls AA basketball. The Bishop Canevin Crusaders (22-4) started championship weekend in grand fashion, defeating top-seeded Seton LaSalle 56-47 and winning their first championship in school history Seton LaSalle (24-2) came into the game with a 66 game winning streak over WPIAL competition and an 8 game winning streak over the Crusaders. Bishop Canevin jumped out to an early 18-8 lead thanks to three 3 pointers from Johnie Olkosky.  The Crusaders defense also caused problems, forcing 8 first half turnovers.
