District College Football Recap for Saturday, October 19th
October 20, 2013
Week 7 of the local college football scene saw an upset in the PSAC and the battle for the PAC title looms large with W & J and Geneva posting wins. Carnegie Mellon traveled to Georgia to meet a D-1 foe and the Steel City Showdown turned into a special teams battle in Moon Township.Here are recaps of all the games from Saturday:Slippery Rock 34 – Clarion 13 The Rock led 20-0 at the half and racked up 506 yards of offense in the Homecoming win at Thompson-Mihalik Stadium. Nigel Barksdale tossed two more touchdown passes and Teddy Blakeman scored twice as #24 Slippery Rock moves to 6-1 overall and into a first place tie for the West Division lead with Gannon falling to Mercyhurst on Thursday night.

While the schedule was light, the playoff ramifications were there in two of the games as Western Beaver looked to clinch a postseason berth in the Big 7 Conference and Brentwood hoped to stay in control of their own destiny as they are now one win away from clinching in the Black Hills Conference. Scholastic Notebook – 10/18/2013
These are the days of spread offenses and pass-happy teams in WPIAL football. It’s not often you see a team average over 300 yards a game on the ground.But in the next two weeks, two of the top games in the WPIAL will match teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It is definitely unusual. And if you think running the football is not important any more, consider that all four of the teams involved in those games enter Week 8 with perfect records.Aliquippa plays at Beaver Falls in a big WPIAL Class AA Midwestern game tonight, matching two teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It will be the same next week when Thomas Jefferson plays at West Mifflin a WPIAL Class AAA Big Nine Conference game.

Stretch Run football continues as we have hit Week Eight of the 2013 WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League season. Usually this time of year, very little attention is paid to the few non-conference games each week. But even though they have nothing to do with their conference record that will determine their playoff fate, there are three non-conference games on Friday that are tasty nuggets as six playoff bound teams could be playing for overall seeding instead of conference standing. North Allegheny and Greensburg CC Win WPIAL Girls Team Tennis Crowns
North Allegheny has won a lot of WPIAL gold in its rich, athletic history. now for the first time, they can add a girls tennis crown to the trophy case. The Tigers captured their first ever district girls tennis title with a victory over Shady Side Academy Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Greensburg Central Catholic is celebrating its first girls team tennis championship in 14 years. The Centurions edged Sewickley Academy 3-2 in the finals Thursday to win the schools third Class AA district title and first since 1999. PIAA Boys and Girls Western Regional Golf Qualifiers

The PIAA state golf qualifiers were held Wednesday at the Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville as WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League boys and girls golfers battled players from District 6 and District 10 in an effort to qualify for the state championships. 16 Class AAA and AA boys golfers will be headed to York while 14 girls golfers qualified for the two day event next week.PIAA BOYS CLASS AAA: (Top 12 Golfers Advance to State Finals)

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap: AVONWORTH ANTELOPES 3 – Quaker Valley Quakers 2
In Hometown Volleyball action the Avonworth Antelopes defeat the Quaker Valley Quakers 3-2 in a back and forth match. Game scores were 25-12, 25-22, 14-25, 24-26, and 16-14.It was a non conference match up, and both teams had clinched playoff berths. QV in AA, and Avonworth in single A. This match was a tune up for the playoffs. The Quakers were on a one game losing streak while the Antelopes had lost three straight, two of them section games.The first game was all Avonworth as the girls were firing on all cylinders. The Lopes never trailed and took a close 14-10 game to 23-10 with great serving by Abby Oberdick and Ericka Thomas. QV had all sorts of problems on service receive and Avonworth won 25-12.
