WPIAL Basketball Playoffs – Tuesday 2/25 Recaps

It was a banner night on MSA Sports...The highest scoring game in WPIAL playoff history, a pair of overtime games, a 12th-seed Cinderella stuns a top-ranked team, an undefeated team rallies to remain perfect and a team wins to clinch a sixth straight trip to Championship Weekend. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your weekly thermometer of streaking teams around the league. Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Playoff Quarterfinals recap for 2/23/14
The Blackhawk Cougars were a much better road team during the regular season than at home, Sunday night was no different in the opening game of the PIHL Open Cup playoffs as the 5th seeded Cougars knocked off the 4th seeded Trojans at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.  Robert Swinderman scored twice and goalie Cory Steinle stopped 28 of 30 shots to advance to the next round on Tuesday night.

Allderdice Boys & Obama Girls Win City League Basketball Titles

In the end, the Eagles and Dragons split the gold. After Pittsburgh Obama Academy knocked off Allderdice Friday in the girls basketball title game, the Dragons returned the favor by edging the Eagles in the boys finals on Saturday afternoon, ending Obama's unbeaten season. WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships Recap
There have been a lot of great milestones in the wrestling career of Kittanning senior Jason Nolf, who currently has a career record of 169-1 and is planning to attend Penn State University in the fall. Nolf added to his milestones when he was able to join a special group of wrestlers on Saturday, when he became the 23rd WPIAL wrestler to ever win 4 WPIAL Championships. Nolf earned his fourth title in dominating fashion at 145 pounds. He won by a pair of falls over George Rogers of Washington and Austin Mears of Mount Pleasant to put him into Saturday nights final against Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh. In the finals, Nolf jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead before turning Welsh and pinning him in 1:22.

WPIAL Quarterfinals Saturday Spotlight Game: Quigley Catholic 49 – St. Joseph 39
In a battle of the Spartans and a rematch from last year’s Girls Class A quarterfinals, the result was the same as Quigley Catholic moved on to the semifinals with the backyard win, 49-39 over St. Joseph, at the Ambridge Field House. Liz Duer and Kaitlyn Smith each had 14 points to lead Quigley to the victory.

WPIAL Basketball Playoffs – Saturday 2/22 Recaps

NH’s Bostick & Char Valley’s Lohman Win WPIAL AAA Diving Gold
North Hills senior Noah Bostick captured a bronze medal as a sophomore and at last year’s competition he took home the silver with a score of 496.65. Consider the progression complete for Bostick as he captured the WPIAL Class AAA gold medal by posting a score of 506.85 at North Allegheny High School. Bostick was solid throughout all three rounds of the meet. After going back and forth with Penn-Trafford sophomore Joey Ference heading into the final round of three dives, Bostick took control with his first final dive and finished 52.10 points ahead of the second place finisher, Andrew Doerfler of North Allegheny.

WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day One Recap
Burrell came into the AA individual WPIAL Championships with the most representatives in the tournament with a wrestler in all 14 weight classes and through the first day, the Buccaneers have not disappointed. Burrell advanced all 14 wrestlers into the second day with a leading 8 wrestlers advancing to the semi-finals. Making the semi-finals for the Buccaneers were John Andrejcik (132), Damon Greenwald (138), Corey Falleroni (145), Steven Edwards (152), Derrick Beattie (160), Nick Pattock (170), Robert Scherer (195), and Allan Beattie (285).

WPIAL Quarterfinals Friday Spotlight Game: Vincentian 88 – Clairton 51
February 21, 2014
In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class A Championship Game, the result was the same but in a much more dominant fashion, as No. 2 Vincentian (22-2) continued on their path to repeat as the Class A Champions, taking down No. 10 Clairton 88-51. The Royals forced 20 turnovers in the first half, 38 in all for the game to pull away for the victory at West Allegheny High School. Vincentian Academy started cold from the floor, missing their first five shots and were just 5 of 19 in the opening quarter from the field. But the full court defensive pressure was there, as Clairton (10-7) turned the ball over 13 times in the opening frame and could only muster four field goals on 13 attempts.

S. Fayette’s Zombeck and Mohawk’s Stelter Repeat as WPIAL AA Diving Champs
At South Park High School in the WPIAL Boys AA Diving Championships, Senior Stephen Zombeck wins his second WPIAL championship in a row. He outdistanced 2nd place finisher Micah Ringer (last years silver medalist) by 51.15 points. Last year he beat Ringer in a close contest by 10.6 points. Zombeck In the process, smashed his score of last year of 353.25. He posted a 423.55 besting last years mark by 70.30 points. Ringer beat his score by 30 points from last year taking the silver 2 straight years.  In 2012 as Sophomores Zombeck finished 2nd, Ringer 5th.

Scholastic Notebook – 02/21/2014
If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. Norwin and Franklin Regional made it in 2008. Kiski Area and Latrobe made it in 2010.

Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game recap for 2/19/14
At the Beaver County Ice Arena in PIHL Open class competition, the Blackhawk Cougars with a chance to play for a home playoff game lost in a tough battle with McDowell 5-3. A win by the Trojans sends the Cougars on the road Sunday February 23rd at Mercyhurst College at a time to be determined in the first round of the Northeast section playoffs.With the loss Blackhawk is the number 5 seed, McDowell the number 4.

NEW WPIAL BASKETBALL ALIGNMENT

Chartiers Valley and Lincoln Park boys are moving up, New Castle boys and Hampton boys are moving down and Pittsburgh Central Catholic boys are moving north...again. The WPIAL Board of Control on Tuesday approved the new alignment for bot the boys and girls in high school basketball.
