PIHL Notebook – New 2014-2015 Alignment
Welcome to a special edition of “PIHL Notebook.” As documented earlier this fall, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League is under new leadership. A new board of governors was already in place last season, and now with a new commissioner in former North Allegheny head coach Jim Black, the powers that be are setting out to change things with an eye toward restoring some competitive balance across the league. Not since the formation of the Open Class has such a dramatic shift occurred. Sure, some notable programs have joined or left the league over the years. Some have moved up or down a classification. But this goes well beyond that, and it will be an ever-shifting situation going forward.

Scholastic Notebook – 10/03/2014
October 3, 2014
Maybe you’ve heard the quote “Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier.” It is a line from legendary sports announcer Howard Cosell, describing boxer Joe Frazier after he went down from a George Foreman punch in a famous 1973 bout. In WPIAL football this year, it is “Up goes Frazier, Up goes Frazier.” Things haven’t been this good in Perryopolis (where Frazier is located) since 10 years after that Frazier-Foreman fight. The Frazier Commodores are 5-0 and have a showdown tonight with Beth-Center for first place in the Tri-County South Conference. The winner likely will win the Tri-County South title. Frazier has not started a season 5-0 since 1983, when the school made it all the way to the WPIAL Class A championship game before losing to Western Beaver.

With living legend Arnold Palmer in attendance Thursday afternoon at the Latrobe Country Club in the Boys AAA Golf Championships, it all came down to a one hole playoff as Anthony Cordaro, a sophomore from Fox Chapel defeated Indiana senior Kyle Grube with a par on hole number one to win the 2014 WPIAL crown. Cordaro's first shot was under the trees and he powered out and on to the green with his second shot. He then two putted for par for the victory. Grube had a perfect drive on the playoff hole but his second shot hit the green and rolled off. On in three, he two putted for a bogey. Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. We have reached the mid-way point in the season—a critical point where some teams make it or break it, step on the gas, or are comfortable setting the cruise control for the remainder of the season.  Chick’s Picks spent some time reflecting on her own first half performance, along with other recent halves of distinction—most notably the Steelers regular season opener against the Browns. The Steelers built a seemingly solid 27-3 lead over the Browns going into halftime.  Battling back, though, the Browns tied the game late in the fourth quarter before the Steelers eventually closed the door with a game-winning field goal.

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Six 2014
The tension is starting to mount here in the 2014 WPIAL football season. On the field, in the standings and, yes sometimes in the plush MSA Sports World Headquarters as some of the MSA gang have occasionally wandered too close to Mike Azadian’s “Friday Night Eats”. Mitch tends to respond to people taking his pizza the way the 2014 Clairton Bears have responded to not picking up their sixth straight WPIAL championship in 2013, angrily and emphatically. So as we get set to go Big Game Hunting here in week six I warn you Don’t poke the Bears, and don’t eat that last chocolate chip cookie, it’s for your own safety.
