WPIAL Alum Q&A – Micah Mason
The storied history of basketball in the WPIAL has produced some tremendous shooters, but perhaps nobody has been a better marksman than Micah Mason. Mason, formerly of Highlands High School and current with Duquesne University, is the subject of this week's WPIAL Alum Q&A. Mason made an instant impact with the Highlands Golden Rams, as he scored 23 points in his first varsity game in helping his squad upset a highly-ranked Penn Hills team. From that point going forward, Mason rewrote the record books, finishing with 2,272 points in his storied career. Perhaps more impressively, Mason set the all-time WPIAL mark for most made three-pointers, besting a total previously held by T.J. McConnell.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/31/2016
Cali Konek’s scoring average has opened eyes across WPIAL girls basketball, and here is another startling statistical fact from the freshman guard at Imani Christian: Konek has a good chance to become the first WPIAL girl to score 1,000 points in a season. And she might reach the milestone in the regular season. Scoring 1,000 points in the regular season seems surreal, but Konek already has 873 points and Imani Christian has three games left this week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday). Konek averages 45.9 points a game. So if she gets her average, she will break 1,000 points.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Seairra Barrett
Seairra Barrett was one of the top basketball players in the WPIAL in recent memory during her accomplished career at Central Valley. Scholastic Notebook – 01/22/2016
January 22, 2016
There seems to be some question as to how good the top teams really are in WPIAL Class AA Section 4 basketball. Brownsville is 13-4, Charleroi 12-3 and Waynesburg 7-7. History makes you wonder about the strength of the teams. Among the three, there are a total of three WPIAL titles and only one in the past 50-plus years. Brownsville won a championship in 2001 while Charleroi won titles in 1940 and 1958. On top of that, no one from the section has done much in the playoffs in recent history. But while many may question the strength of the teams in the section, there is no question that Section 4 is where the scorers reside.

New Leader Takes Over PIHL
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League will be undergoing a transition in leadership for the second time in less than two years, as Jim Black resigned from his position as League Commissioner last week. Black, a longtime coach of Beaver, North Hills, Pine-Richland and, most recently, North Allegheny varsity hockey associations, leaves the League he took over in the summer of 2014. Associate Commissioner Dave Fryer has been named the interim League Commissioner for the remainder of the 2015-2016 season. “I did this with a heavy heart because I enjoyed working with the PIHL and its members,” Black said in his resignation letter. “It was truly a dream job having been involved in Hockey in the Western PA community for such a long time.”
