South Hills notebook: Thomas Jefferson’s Territ named player of the week

Notebook items from around the South Hills:

• The Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association released its latest rankings Monday based on a vote of all 39 WPIAL coaches.

Thomas Jefferson senior outside hitter Alex Territ recently was named as Class AA Player of the Week.

The TJ netters are ranked No. 8 in the WPVCA team rankings.

• Among the statistical leaders for the Brentwood girls basketball team in 2018-19 was senior guard Natalie Murrio, who led the Spartans in assists while averaging 12 points.

Murrio was joined by five other seniors on the Brentwood squad — guards Anna Betz, Abby Wolf and Brooke McQuillan; forwards Rebecca Dirling and Sydney Gilchrist.

Betz was the team’s leading scorer with a 14.8 ppg average. Dirling and Murrio were the top rebounders and shot blockers. Murrio, Wolf and McQuillan finished 1-2-3 in assists.

Brentwood ended up 20-5 and advanced to the WPIAL finals for the first time since 1994. The Spartans also won their first section title in 25 years.

“This was a special group of girls,” coach Rachel Thomas said.

• Murrio (3A/2A girls) and TJ guard Jenna Clark (5A girls), along with Baldwin guard Christian Barr (North/boys), were selected to play in the annual Roundball Classic all-star basketball games April 12-13 at Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

Seven games over two days took place at Metheny Fieldhouse. Baldwin’s Eugene Wilson coached the North boys all-star squad.

• Clark, a Yale recruit who averaged 20.6 points, six assists and 3.7 steals in 2018-19, was named to the Trib 10 girls all-star basketball team.

The Jaguars finished as the WPIAL Class 5A girls runner-up, advanced to the PIAA semifinals and posted a 22-8 record.

• There are close to 100 athletes in the Baldwin track and field program this season. The exact number at the start of the season was 98 — 49 boys and 49 girls.

For the boys team, they consist of seniors Mike Badstibner, Noah Bartic, Russ Cyprowski, Jason Depretis, Ethan Hoey, Jared Koenig, Bailey O’Malley, Brendan O’Malley, Lucas Perfetti, William Wiles and John Ziegler; and juniors Robert Abbiatici, Teddy Boehm, Corey Geyer, Caden Harsh, Shayne Henchell, Thar Eh Hsern, Jarren Kelly, Nasser Penn, Angelo Priore, Mason Stahl and Joe Weber.

Also on the team are sophomores Maisen Bourquin, Dorien Ford, Joe Kosslow, Chris Lucas, John Mainarich, Jeff Natter, Alex Rayburg, Joe Starzynski, Kody Trolle, Noah Wehunt, Anthony Williams and Zach Wyse; plus freshmen Obadiah Abdul, Kameron Allen, Dom Ditoro, Jeremiah Felix, Owen Hutchison, Robert Konesky, Brandon Lorkovic, Nathaniel Okwu, Tevin Omune, Cody Randal, Blaize Richards, Nathan Schenk, Isaiah Siwik, Derek Turner and Kevin Weber.

For the girls team, they are seniors Macy Hale, Kerri Heron, Devon Schroeder, Madison Seitzinger and Vanessa Taylor; and juniors Emma Brandwene, Mia Fischetti, Alexis Kennard, Elizabeth Knight, Olivia Kniola, Tamia Little, Kathy Nguyen, Riley Nolan, Makenzie Shandor, Victoria Tamborino and Ashley Wilson.

Other athletes on the squad include sophomores Lena Barakat, Gina Bolla, Brina Davic, Victoria DiCesare, Sydney Ernst, Mariah Jones, Jennifer Joyce, Alyssa Lacko, Megan Puzak, Morgan Sakely, Louisa Tiriobo and Taylor Weis; plus freshmen Isabella Acquaro, Morgan Altavilla, Mia DiCesare, Gillian Geyer, Greta Gorman, Riley Hackel, Erin Hampton, Abigail Herrle, Emiley Hillgartner, Carly Kennard Olivia Macellaro, Brooke Scanlon, Sierra Schmidt, Emiliy Schwab, Abbey Seng, Elianna Sinkule, Alexa Teter, Anna Wiatrowski, Kayli Woods and Paige Wosko.

• Baldwin’s early season lineup in boys volleyball was spurred by seven seniors, and complemented by four juniors.

Senior starters consisted of middle hitters Colin Poe and Nick Pouch, outside hitters Russ Cyprowski and Jake Kemerer, right-side hitter James Luttringer, and liberos Colton Barr and Joey Shields.

The four junior starters were outside hitters Zach Remlinger and Sujan Dangal, right-side hitter Nick Campana, and setter Mason Hoydick.

• Alaina Wodarek was a multi-year competitor on the Baldwin gymnastics team.

“Gymnastics can be very frustrating and difficult, but it is important to remember that it’s all for fun,” Wodarek said. “Once you focus on enjoying what you’re doing, you love every minute and routines come easier.”

• The Brentwood softball team’s batterymates consist of a rookie pitcher, freshman Bailey Herrera, and a veteran catcher, senior Abby Wolf.

They are joined in the starting lineup by juniors Jaden Schwartz (SS), Kylie Hammond (1B), Jessica Hines (RF), sophomores Sidney Wuenschell (CF) and Paige Miller (DP), and freshmen Alyssa Steele (2B), Kellie Bruschi (3B) and Jaelyn Weingartner (LF).
