Notebook items from around the South Hills:

• Four area seniors were selected to play in the annual Roundball Classic girls all-star games April 20-21 at Geneva in Beaver Falls.

Brentwood's Morgan Dryburgh, a 5-foot-11 forward, and Seton LaSalle's Alayna Ziegler, a 5-5 guard, are members of the West and East squads.

Baldwin's Abbey Larkin, a 5-10 guard, and Thomas Jefferson's Marina Petruzzi, a 5-7 guard, are members of the 6A and 5A squads.

A three-sport athlete at Brentwood, Dryburgh helped spark the girls basketball team to an historic playoff run this season. The Spartans advanced to the WPIAL semifinals and PIAA second round, and finished 18-8 overall.

“I'm so happy to be a part of Brentwood history this year,” Dryburgh said. “I know we didn't go all the way, but we still made it far into WPIALs and states. I'm so proud of my team, and I thought we played well together. We were so successful, and it was one of the most-fun seasons of my high school career.

“I know the team is going to go far next year, and I can't wait to come back to watch. I'm sad to move on, but I have all the memories we made together to take with me.”

Team practices for the Roundball Classic, which are open to the public, will be April 18 at Geneva.

A recognition dinner for the players will be April 19 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Cranberry.

• Baldwin's boys volleyball team kicked off its section schedule with an impressive 3-0 win at home last week against Peters Township.

The Highlanders' starting rotation was led by five seniors: right-side hitter Ben Remlinger, setter Dante Parente, middle hitters Mike Goga and Dan Kolski, and defensive specialist Justin Hackman. They were joined by Colton Barr, a junior libero; plus sophomores Zach Remlinger (outside hitter) and Mark Campana (utility player).

Outside hitters Russ Cyprowski, a junior, and Ted Boehm, a sophomore, were missing from the lineup because of illness.

“I thought the guys made some good plays when they needed to,” Baldwin coach Eric Falcione said. “We were not real sharp, but we played well enough to win.”

• The 6-4 Goga, a three-year starter on the Baldwin boys basketball team, is third-year starter in the Highlanders' volleyball program.

He is one of several players on volleyball squad with extensive varsity experience.

“I think we have a chance to be a very good team,” Goga said. “We have enough talent to compete for a section championship. And we have a good deal of experience this year, which should help us in tough situations.”

• Baldwin has captured 22 section championships in softball in school history.

The Highlanders are three-time defending section champions. They have posted a 10-2 record in section play in each of the last three seasons.
