Franklin Regional standout junior Toryn Fulton announced Monday she has made a verbal commitment to play college softball at South Florida.
Fulton, a power-hitting outfielder who played second base last season for the Panthers, hit .552 with a 1.755 OPS. She had eight home runs, seven doubles and 32 RBIs.
Panthers coach Jim Armstrong said 24 schools reached out to Fulton and she entertained several offers.
James Madison and Penn State were at least two of the possible suitors for the 6-foot Fulton, whose father, Billy, played briefly for the New York Yankees as a pitcher in 1987.
Billy Fulton is a Penn Hills graduate.
“She is pretty special,” Armstrong said of his all-state player. “The game comes so natural to her. I am happy I get to coach her. I have been saying that since she was in seventh grade.”
Toryn Fulton has 16 career home runs.
She joins two other Division I players from Franklin Regional that Armstrong has coached in Natalie Armstrong (Ohio University), the coach’s daughter, Angela Buccilli (Coastal Carolina), and Kayla Jackson (Maryland Baltimore County).
South Florida, located in Tampa, plays in the American Athletic Conference with Wichita State, Central Florida, Tulsa, Houston, East Carolina and Memphis.
