Shaler notebook: Girls bowling team makes statement

The Shaler girls bowling team announced its intentions to the rest of the WPIBL on opening night.

The Titans (1-0) bear Butler, who are the defending section, WPIBL and Western Regional champions, 4-3.

Shaler was led by Bella Pilyih, who rolled a 620 series with a high game of 219. Junior Shannon Roche also contributed, rolling games of 169 and 150.

The Titans boys team lost 7-0 to the Golden Tornado.

Shaler hockey looks to stop skid

The Titans lost eight straight games after a 13-0 loss to Hempfield last Monday. Shaler (1-6-0-3) has found scoring to be at a premium, with the Titans registering 19 goals on the season.

Spencer Platt leads the team with eight points (three goals, five assists). Adam Baginski has scored a team-high five goals, and Sam Stayduhar has contributed four.

Duritza finds role at Marietta

Sophomore forward Luce Duritza has started to find her groove for Marietta (Ohio) College.

After suffering an ACL tear during her senior year of high school, Duritza missed the entire season and was still rehabbing the following summer.

During her freshman season of college, the 5-foot-11 forward only appeared in two games.

This season, Duritza is off to a solid start, contributing 4.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during Marietta’s 5-1 record.

Duritza is shooting 64.7 percent (11 of 17) from the field.

Winters off to strong start at Waynesburg

Dylan Winters has worked his way into the lineup for the Waynesburg wrestling team.

Winters, a freshman, has compiled a 7-4 record thus far at 133 pounds. Four of Winters’ victories have come via fall.

Colarusso scores at Oberlin

Oberlin freshman Brian Colarusso wrapped up his freshman season with 10 appearances, catching 10 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Colarusso only played football during his senior season at Shaler.

Shaler athletes sign with colleges

Kelsey Cordera, Olivia DeLeonibus, Zach Hernon and Ryan Sullivan signed letters of intent during the early signing period in November.

Sullivan, a senior wrestler who won the PIAA Class AAA Championship at 113 pounds last season, signed with Pitt.

Cordera signed on to play softball at Edinboro. DeLeonibus chose to head to Seton Hill forsoccer, and Hernon will play baseball at Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.).
