Shady Side Academy ends Steel Valley’s regular season win streak with victory

There was plenty of offense in Friday night’s Class 2A Allegheny Conference matchup between Shady Side Academy and Steel Valley.

Skyy Moore’s offensive attack was the best.

Shady Side Academy’s senior quarterback figured in on all eight touchdowns in a 56-36 win at Campbell Field in Munhall. The loss dropped No. 1 Steel Valley to 2-1 overall and in conference play and snapped a 22-game regular season winning streak.

Moore scored four times on the ground with runs of 2, 15, 7 and 31 yards. He also threw touchdowns of 72 and 46 yards to Dino Tomlin and 35 and 30 yards to Billy Frolich.

“Both of those guys (Tomlin and Frolich) make for some tough matchups for defensive coordinators to try and decide how to defend us,” Shady Side coach Chuck DiNardo said.

Moore carried 20 times for 160 yards and completed 7 of 13 passes for 274 yards for Shady Side, the No. 2 ranked team in the WPIAL.

“Skyy does a nice job,” DiNardo said. “What he can do with his legs and throwing the ball as well, he’s really developed as a quarterback.”

Moore was limited during the third quarter for a bit with some leg cramps, before putting the game away for the Indians. DiNardo also pointed to the leadership skills of his senior trio as a big part of the success so far this season.

“All three are really awesome kids,” DiNardo said. “I can’t say enough about the buy in they’ve had in kind of changing our culture. This was a team two years ago that went 0-9, so to get from that point to where we are now, I can’t say enough about those guys.”

Steel Valley’s rushing attack was once again sparked by Todd Hill and Kam Williams.

Hill rushed for three scores and also ran in a two-point conversion, while Williams paced the Ironmen with 218 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Hill’s two-point conversion run after Williams’ 75-yard touchdown tied the game at 36-36 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter before Shady Side scored the game’s final 20 points.

Even though Steel Valley was able to tie the game in the third quarter, the Ironmen might look back to a three-drive sequence in the first half. Steel Valley fumbled the ball on three consecutive possessions with two of the turnovers leading directly to Shady Side Academy touchdowns and sparked the Indians to a 22-6 second quarter lead.
