The Sewickley Academy boys tennis team has been led again this season by senior Severin Harmon, a four-year starter who plans to attend Dartmouth in the fall.

Harmon has been the team’s No. 1 singles player throughout his career. He also competed at the No. 1 position on the QV boys golf team.

Sewickley received the No. 6 seed for the WPIAL Class 3A team tournament and defeated No. 11 Shaler, 5-0, in a first-round matchup.

Harmon, freshman Will Bojalad and senior Sebastian Tan have competed as the Panthers’ top three singles players this year. Sophomores Max Kopf and Ben Terrell, along with junior Finn Wentz and senior Jason Chen, have competed at doubles.

And senior Rob Fogle has added depth to the lineup this spring.

The Panthers were scheduled to play No. 3 Mt. Lebanon in the quarterfinals. Mt. Lebanon defeated No. 14 South Fayette, 4-1, in the first round.

In Class 2A, Quaker Valley received the seventh seed for the WPIAL team tournament and was slated to meet No. 10 Central Valley at home in the first round.

The Quakers, a.k.a. “Team Scrappy,” qualified for the playoffs despite losing seven varsity players, including six starters, from last year’s squad.

Sophomore Will Meagher was the only returning starter.

Meagher is QV’s No. 1 singles player, moving up from No. 3 of a year ago.

Also back from last year’s team are senior doubles players Matthew Henry and junior Tanner Schultz, slotted at a singles spot.

Meagher, Henry and Schultz are united with junior Patrick Connors and sophomore Charlie Pyle in the QV lineup. Connors was paired with Henry at first doubles.

Freshmen Dom Ditano and Carter Hawes also saw playing time this season while junior Sutton Hoehl, freshman J.P. Kenny and sophomore Jack Watson added three new faces to the mix.

The WPIAL boys tennis team championships were scheduled for May 7 at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center on the Washington & Jefferson College campus.

There will be a new WPIAL team champion in Class 2A as Sewickley Academy, last year’s district winner, is in 3A this season.

The Panthers extended their district record with their 25th championship last year, edging QV, 3-2, in the 2A finals.
