Theresa Wilson
School: Sewickley Academy
Sport: Basketball
Class: Senior
Claim to fame: What Class A No. 4-ranked Sewickley Academy lacks in height, it makes up for with speed and precision, according to senior guard Theresa Wilson.
That has been the team’s focus this season, one in which it is one game out of first place in Section 1-A. Wilson led the charge in the Panthers’ last game by scoring 20 points with most of her baskets coming off fast breaks.
How has your role on the team changed as a senior?
I think as a senior I’m trying to be a leader. We have a very good senior class, and I think we are all leaders in helping younger players transition. We are trying to help them be more comfortable and confident with us.
Would you rather play in a game that is fairly easy or one that is close from beginning to end?
I like ones that are close beginning to end. It’s more rewarding when you win those games. It’s more exciting. As an athlete and as a competitor, I like those games that are back and forth and go down to the last second.
What would it mean to you to win a section title, the first for the program since 2004?
It would mean so much, because we’ve worked so hard to build up this program. I think the senior class has put in a lot of effort, so it would mean a lot to win a section title or a WPIAL title. All of that hard work would pay off.
What will it take for Sewickley Academy to take a step to the next level?
I think we can work on the little things. We need to focus on those little things on defense, the little things on offense and solidify our whole game. We also have to be disciplined and work as hard as we can, because winning those titles won’t come easy.
If you could play one-on-one against a pro basketball player, who would it be?
I’m a Warriors fan, so I’d go with Steph Curry. I think he’d probably have me beat, but I think it would be fun to play against him. Maybe I could try to shoot some 3s on him.
