Brady Mosberger
School: Sewickley Academy
Sport: Hockey
Class: Sophomore
Claim to fame: Brady Mosberger recently helped Sewickley Academy win its game against Beaver to improve the Panthers’ record to 4-3.
Mosberger saved 21 of 22 shots on goal for the 6-1 win over Beaver. Just one goal shy of his first varsity shutout, he’d rather accomplish something else on the ice.
How did you become a goalie?
Back in third grade my uncle was a goalie (at Seneca Valley), and I really liked that. I decided I wanted to be a goalie, because it feels a little more special. Everything goes through the goalie. If the goalie has an off game, the chances of his team winning go down a lot. You also control the pace of the game with your rebound control and things like that.
How are you adjusting to being on the varsity team?
My coach has been using our other goalie (Thomas Sykes) against some of the harder teams and me against some of the easier teams we’ve played, so it hasn’t been that bad of a transition. It has worked out really well. I like the pressure. I like whenever you get to play the last couple minutes of a close game.
What has been the biggest challenge at this level?
For me, it’s just kind of taking the technical stuff that has always been a part of the game and just bringing it up to a faster speed, because these players are a lot faster and play at a much higher skill level.
Was your game against Beaver your best performance this season?
I actually think I did better in my game against Deer Lakes, (stopping 30 of 34 shots). It was a much closer game, and at any point they could have scored at the end of the game. I feel like I made a lot of clutch saves at the end whereas the game against Beaver wasn’t nearly as close.
Who is playing great defense in front of you and not allowing opponents to get chances?
Tommy Gordon was doing an amazing job last game and helping out a lot. Last game, just in general, everyone played well in front of me and helped out. They were keeping a lot of shots off the net and forcing Beaver to shoot wide.
Would you rather make a great save to secure a shutout or score an end-to-end empty netter?
That’s a really hard question, because I’ve never scored a goal before. I feel like I’ve made plenty of good saves. It would feel really good to score a goal. I’d probably have to go with a goal, because that would a kind of be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
