Senior scholar-athletes awarded scholarships from sports hall of fame

Kyah Russell was a standout on the tennis court for the Gateway girls team, and her dedication to the sport was matched by her dedication to academics.

She will attend the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a nursing degree.

Russell joins Penn-Trafford’s Tyler Horvat, Franklin Regional’s Mason Fishell and East Allegheny’s Paige Yusko as this year’s recipients of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, East Boros Chapter, Scholarships.

The quartet will be recognized and celebrated Monday evening at a dinner to conclude the 16th annual East Boros Scholar-Athlete Golf Classic at Edgewood Country Club in Churchill.

Fishell, a state-qualifying diver, will attend Kenyon College and major in math and physics.

Horvat, a golfer at Penn-Trafford who also helped lead the Warriors baseball team to a section championship this spring, will move on to Washington & Jefferson College where he will major in financial economics.

Yusko, a member of the East Allegheny girls soccer team, will attend Slippery Rock University and major in elementary and special education.

The honorees receive $1,000 towards their college educations.

More than $50,000 has been awarded since the program’s inception. The goal of the golf outing is to raise money for these scholarships.

Each spring, high school athletic directors from eight area schools – East Allegheny, Gateway, Penn-Trafford, Riverview, Franklin Regional, Penn Hills, Plum and Woodland Hills – are asked to nominate student-athletes they feel match the criteria of athletics, academics and community service set for the scholarships.

The East Boros scholarship committee then reviews the qualifications and selects the four recipients.
