Senior Laekyn Flinn sets standard for Thomas Jefferson girls basketball

One of the team leaders for the TJ girls basketball team is 5-foot-9 senior guard/forward Laekyn Flinn, who will continue her career after high school at Frostburg State.

Frostburg State is a member of the NCAA Division II Mountain East Conference.

“I chose Frostburg because it had everything to offer that I wanted in a school,” Flinn said. “It has a great basketball program with amazing coaches, a beautiful campus and a great academic environment. I am planning on majoring in nursing, which is also a big part of why I chose Frostburg.”

TJ coach Matt Gould believes Flinn made a great choice to play for the Bobcats. Flinn considered Notre Dame College and Mansfield.

“Anytime a student-athlete is blessed with an opportunity to play at the next level is exciting,” Gould said. “Laekyn comes from an athletic family and is the next to join the ranks of collegiate athletes in the Flinn house. Frostburg State is phenomenal. It’s a cool campus, about two hours from home, and they play in a good conference.

“As a 17 ppg and six-rebound player as a junior, we expect Laekyn to keep those numbers steady this season while running our team with her voice and leadership.”

Flinn’s brother Braden graduated from Mercyhurst where he was a competitor in the wrestling program, and her sister Sydney graduated from Pitt-Johnstown a few years ago after continuing her softball career with the Mountain Cats.

Another older brother, McClain, currently is a member of the baseball team at Pitt-Johnstown.

Flinn has high hopes in section play and beyond. She is complemented by seniors Josie Pugh, Riley McCabe and Caroline Sommer in the backcourt and Bria Ringloff and McKenna Haggerty in the frontcourt.

Flinn, Pugh and McCabe are multi-year starters for the Jaguars.

“My expectations are high for our team,” Flinn said. “After last season, I think we all have high expectations of becoming a playoff contending team.

“We have good experience, so we are definitely looking to improve our section and playoff play this year.”
