Seneca Valley bounced from PIAA tournament in consolation round

HERSHEY — A banged up Seneca Valley wresting team was eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA team tournament Friday after a loss in the consolation round.

The WPIAL runner-up Raiders lost a quarterfinal match to Bethlehem Catholic, 52-11, and then fell to District 1 runner-up Spring-Ford, 32-28.

Seneca Valley only won three bouts against returning state champion Bethlehem Catholic — Alejandro Herrera-Rondon secured a tech fall at 120 pounds, and Patrick Johnson (182) and Nick Funovits (220) won decisions.

In the elimination match, the Raiders built a 16-12 lead early, but Spring-Ford strung together five consecutive pins starting at 170 and took a 32-16 lead.

The Raiders rallied with a major decision from Hunter Swedish (106), a win from Dylan Chappell at 113 and a tech fall from Herrera-Rondon at 120.

Jason Geyer (132) had Seneca Valley’s only pin, while Drew Vlasnik (145) had a major decision and Nick Montalbano (152) and Liam Volk-klos (160) earned wins.

“We’re a little banged up,” Seneca Valley coach Kevin Wildrick said. “We had to work around it and work it out. Now we can focus on the state individual tournament.”
