HERSHEY — Quaker Valley freshman Connor Redinger fell short of his goal at the PIAA Class AA wrestling championships Saturday.
Redinger wanted to be the 106-pound champion, but because of a loss in the semifinals, he had to settle for third place.
“I still have three years to achieve my goals,” Redinger said after he defeated Troy sophomore Sheldon Seymour, 8-2. “I'll be honest with you, I wanted the title, but I'll settle for third.”
Redinger said a late-season growth spurt affected his weight.
“He was all right all season until the final two weeks,” Quaker Valley coach Mike Heinl said. “But he's growing.”
Redinger said weight balance was one of the reasons for his semifinal loss.
“My body wouldn't perform at the level I needed,” Redinger said.
Redinger went 4-1 in his first state tournament and finished with a 39-1 record.
“It's unfortunate that he didn't reach his goal,” Heinl said. “He's right there with everyone in the state.”
Quaker Valley junior Geoff Magin (36-8) also competed in the state tournament and went 1-2.
“Geoff is still here watching,” Heinl said. “That's good sign. He said he's going to give up his other sports to concentrate on wrestling.”
