Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy hockey teams hit the ice for Monday matchups

The Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy hockey teams are part of a busy PIHL schedule Monday evening.

Sewickley Academy hopes to build on last week’s win over Blackhawk as it takes on West Allegheny in Varsity A action at 8:30 p.m. at the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale.

The Panthers are 5-4 in the North Division (fifth place) and are looking up at the Indians (8-1, second place) in the standings.

Quaker Valley snapped a six-game losing skid last week with a win over Penn-Trafford. It hopesto make it two victories in a row as it travels to Kirk S. Nevin Arena in Greensburg for an 8:35 p.m. game against Latrobe.

The Quakers (2-7-0-1) have five points and are tied with Shaler and Armstrong for fifth in the Northwest Division of Varsity AA.

QV girls to deal with Moon

The Quaker Valley girls basketball team, fresh off a season-opening split at the Deer Lakes tournament, will host Moon in 4A/5A nonsection play Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Quakers toppled Avonworth in their first game Friday but were not able to get going offensively in a 47-25 loss to the host Lancers on Saturday in the tournament championship game.

Quaker Valley remains at home to open Section 2-4A action. It will take on New Castle on Thursday and Blackhawk on Monday. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.

Sewickley Academy girls hope to build on tournament title

After claiming the Freedom tournament championship over the weekend, the Sewickley Academy girls basketball team hopes to continue its early-season success with a nonsection matchup Monday at Riverside.

The Panthers averaged 55.5 points in tournament wins over Freedom and Eden Christian.

Sewickley Academy kicks off Section 1-1A play Thursday at Vincentian Academy. The Royals are 1-1 and will test their mettle against 3A Beaver Area on Monday.

Vincentian Academy won the 2018 WPIAL 2A championship.
