Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy boys soccer teams hope to stay undefeated in section play

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team, No. 1 in the TribHSSN Class AA rankings, is riding a nine-game winning streak, and it hopes to keep rolling Tuesday at home against Hopewell.

The Quakers, 8-0 in section play and 9-3 overall, hadn’t allowed a goal during the streak before Saturday’s close 2-1 nonsection victory over 3A Montour.

As dominant as Quaker Valley has been, North Catholic is keeping pace in Section 4. The Trojans are 8-1 with their only setback coming in a 5-0 result to the Quakers on Sept. 18.

Senior Will Andrews leads the Quakers with 13 goals.

The Sewickley Academy boys, No. 2 this week in the TribHSSN Class A rankings, saw their seven-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 2-1 nonsection loss to No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic.

But the Panthers, who outscored their opponents 37-0 during the victory stretch, still are at the top of the Section 1-A standings at 7-0 with a 7-2 overall mark.

They hope to stay in the clear Tuesday with a match at Neshannock.

Riverside (4-1-1) and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (4-2-1) are second and third, respectively, in the Section 1 standings, and the teams will meet Thursday.

Doubles vision

The WPIAL Class AA girls doubles tennis tournament will be Wednesday and Thursday at Shady Side Academy, and Sewickley Academy has two teams in the field.

Section 4 champions Emma DiSantis and Aleena Purewal and runners-up Victoria Keller and Alina Mattson will find out Tuesday who they will play in the first round as the pairings will be released by the WPIAL tennis committee.

Winchester Thurston’s CoCo Chen and Bridget Hughes and Avella’s Jenna Craig and Taylor Ranegar also qualified from Section 4.

The teams will play through the semifinals Thursday, with the championship and consolation finals set for Friday. The top three finishing teams from the AA field will advance to the PIAA championships Nov. 2 and 3 at Hershey Racquet Club.

Quakers hope to stay alive

The Quaker Valley girls volleyball team gained ground last week on the final playoff spot in Section 2-AAA, and it hopes to get closer Tuesday evening at home against Obama Academy.

The Quakers (3-5) sit two games behind fourth-place West Allegheny (5-3) with four section games remaining.

Quaker Valley swept West Mifflin on Sept. 25 to snap a mini two-game section skid, but two days later, the Quakers lost 3-0 to third-place Montour (6-2).

QV will face a stiff challenge Thursday when it pays a visit to section co-leader South Fayette (7-1).
