Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys basketball teams begin seasons in tournament action

The WPIAL high school basketball season begins Friday in gyms all over the region, and the Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys teams open with tournament play.

The Quakers will play at the Moon Tournament against Brashear on Friday at 7 p.m. Vincentian and Moon also will be in action.

QV is set to play Saturday at 5 p.m. against Vincentian.

The Panthers kick off the season Friday at the Baldwin/Peters Township Tournament and will face North Catholic at 5 p.m.

They will test their mettle Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Butler.

Girls hoops squads tip off Friday

The QV girls will open at 6 p.m. against Avonworth at the Deer Lakes Tournament.

Their Saturday opponent, either the host Lancers or Riverview, will be determined based on whether they win or lose Friday.

The Sewickley Academy girls begin their season Friday at 8 p.m. against Freedom at the Freedom Tournament.

Beth-Center and Eden Christian open tournament play at 6 p.m.

The winners and losers will play Saturday in the championship and consolation games.

QV wrestlers open at duals event

The Quaker Valley wrestling team begin its season Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Hampton Dawg Duals.

It will be an early chance for the Quakers to test themselves as they hope to return to the WPIAL Class AA team playoffs for the second straight season.

Seven starters return for QV including state qualifiers Geoff Magin and Conner Redinger (third at Hershey).
