When Canon-McMillan athletic director and Powerade Tournament director Frank Vulcano announced the 2019 holiday wrestling tournament field in June, he said he was still hoping to add one of the top teams in the country.
He did when perennial private school power Wyoming Seminary agreed to come to the Dec. 27 and 28 tournament.
Wyoming Seminary is one of 14 new schools coming. The others are Arlington Martin (Texas), Ellwood City, Elizabeth Forward, Forest Hills (District 6), Mt. Pleasant, Oscar Smith (Va.), Peters Township, Riverheads (Va.), South Park, St. Clairsville (Ohio), Turner Ashby (Va.), Wadsworth (Ohio) and Bullis School (Md.).
There are 54 teams in the field.
There are seven returning Powerade champions. Among the winners from the WPIAL are Seneca Valley’s Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, Norwin’s Kurtis Phipps and North Hills’ Sam Hillegas.
