Police Investigating Death of W & J Football Player Thursday

Police in Washington are investigating the death of a Washington & Jefferson College football player early Thursday morning.
21-year Tim McNerney was taken to the Washington Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 4:42 am. McNerney was found at the corner of College and Maiden Streets.
Washington Police Chief Robert Lemonds said police are treating the death as suspicious, more information will be released after an autopsy was performed. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the death is being treated as a homicide.
Karen Ooserhous, the director of communications at W & J, issued a press release this morning that the college community is deeply saddened to learn of McNerney's death. She added that the safety of the students, both on and off campus, remains the colleges' highest priority.
Grief counselors are being made availible on campus this afternoon. McNerney, a senior, was the starting tailback on the football team. He is a graduate of Knoch High School in Butler County.
