Pitch-count confusion forces another WPIAL baseball team to forfeit

The PIAA’s new pitch-count rule forced another WPIAL baseball team to forfeit.

Chartiers Valley notified the WPIAL that its April 17 victory over Trinity must be forfeited because its player threw more pitches than allowed, CV athletic director Angie Potthoff said.

The loss leaves the Colts (3-10, 3-5) in fifth place in Section 3-5A. Trinity (8-8, 4-5) is fourth.

The PIAA increased the single-day pitch count from 100 to 105 last summer, but that change affected only the playoffs. That double standard has caused confusion this spring for both coaches and umpires.

“We misinterpreted the rule,” Potthoff said. “It was just misread.”

Laurel previously forfeited a victory over Neshannock because of the confusion.
