The Rams were on the charge at the 2019 WPIAL Class AAA track and field championships last Thursday at Slippery Rock, toppling a school record and earning a handful of bids to the PIAA meet.

For the most part, it was the Pine-Richland girls who led the charge in the program’s successful WPIAL showing.

Sophomore Danielle Bryant was the catalyst for the group’s push, securing WPIAL gold in the girls 300-meter hurdles (42.92 seconds).

“We always knew she would be a strong performer for us in the hurdles events and, obviously, as a part of the relay team, too, after she did so well at last year’s championships,” Pine-Richland coach Bill Crummy said.

“But to win the 300? And she just turned in a super, super time, too. She’s a great athlete. I think the biggest surprise was her performance in the 100 hurdles, though. She qualified for states in that event, too, and she never even ran that event for us before this year.”

Bryant also had a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.37 seconds, clinching two PIAA berths in the hurdles events.

She wasn’t the only Rams hurdler to impress last Thursday, as Chalondra Clarke took fifth in the 300 hurdles (46.38) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.36), which earned her a spot at the state meet.

Clarke and Bryant also teamed up with Livie Miller and Ella Rottinghaus to finish second in the 1,600 relay. The group set a school record with a time of 3:57.23.

“We’ve just been so lucky as a program to have great groups in the girls relay, year after year. It seems like it’s an annual thing, breaking that school record,” Crummy said.

“Still, they were only a second or so off of finishing in first place in that event. These girls just make an amazing team together, and it’s going to be great to get them back at states, competing for a title there.”

Miller also finished 10th in the 300 hurdles.

In the field events, Grace Kristofic finished 11th in the javelin with her throw of 111 feet, 2 inches.

Meanwhile, the top boys performance belonged to Luke Meckler, who ran a 40.95 in the 300 hurdles to take eighth place.

The PIAA meet is Friday and Saturday in Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg.
