Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. With the Penguins and Pennsylvania Cup champions crowned, there is just one more order of business we must attend to. It’s time once again to unveil the annual “All Icers Team” as voted on by the MSA Sports Network staff. So, let’s light the lamp on the final 2013-14 edition of “PIHL Notebook.”

2013-14 MSA SPORTS NETWORK “ALL ICERS” – FIRST TEAM:

Christian Siak – Bethel Park

Regular Season: 17 GP, 29 G, 13 A, 5 PP, 1 SH, 2 GW, 2.47 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 4 G, 2 A, 3 PP, 2 GW, 2.00 PTS/GM

Notes: Led Class AAA in goals. He collected multiple points in 13 games, including three 5-point efforts. His four hat tricks included a four-goal, one-assist performance in the season opener against Shaler. He would hit the five-point mark twice more,  on November 22 against Norwin (3 G, 1 PP, 2 A) and on January 2 against Upper St. Clair (2 G, 3 A). Postseason performance included two goals, one on the power play along with the winner, and an assist against Pine-Richland in the semifinals.

Jacob Miller – Penn-Trafford

Regular Season: 19 GP, 23 G, 31 A, 3 PP, 4 SH, 2.84 PTS/GM

Playoffs: 2 GP, 4 G, 2 A, 1 PP, 2 GW, 3.00 PTS/GM

Notes: Led Class AAA in assists and points. Put up multiple points on 12 occasions, including eight (5 G, 2 SH, 3 A) against Norwin on January 10 along with a staggering 10 (4 G, 1 PP, 6 A) against Fox Chapel on January 31. His playoff run featured a four-point effort (3 G, 1 PP, 1 A), including the overtime winner, against North Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

Randy Unger – Bishop Canevin

Regular Season: 22 GP, 27 G, 48 A, 3 PP, 1 SH, 6 GW, 3.41 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 3 G, 6 A, 2 PP, 1 GW, 3.00 PTS/GM

Notes: Led the PIHL in assists and points. He posted multiple points in 21 out of 22 games played. Hit a season-high six points on two occasions, on January 23 against Franklin Regional (3 G, 1 PP, 1 GW, 3 A) and Montour on February 20 (2 G, 1 PP, 4 A). He posted four points, the game-winning power play goal and three assists, against North Hills in the Penguins Gup quarterfinals along with five points (2 G, 1 PP, 3 A) against Hampton in the semifinals.

Nikita Meskin – Bishop Canevin

Regular Season: 22 GP, 1,128 MIN, 20-2-0, 2.03 GAA, 0.915 SV%, 4 SO

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 153 MIN, 3-0-0, 1.00 GAA, 0.919 SV%, 1 SO

Notes: Led Class AA starting goaltenders in wins, GAA and save percentage while tying Hampton’s Cam Raidna in shutouts. His win total also led the PIHL. He stopped a season-high 35 out of 36 shots against Armstrong on January 3 along with 33 out of 34 against North Hills on November 7. Also shut out the Indians with 21 saves on December 9 and later went on to blank West Allegheny with 23 stops on January 16. His year was, of course, capped by the 22-save shutout of Erie Cathedral Prep to capture the 2014 Penguins Cup.

Anthony Franks – Chartiers Valley

Regular Season: 22 GP, 33 G, 36 A, 9 PP, 4 SH, 3 GW, 3.14 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 1 GP, 1 G, 2 A, 3.00 PTS/GM

Notes: Registered at least two points in 16 out of 22 contests. He brought the hats out of the stands on a lucky seven different occasions. Speaking of seven, he hit that point total twice, first against Montour on November 14 (4 G, 2 PP, 1 GW, 3 A) and later against Moon on January 6 (3 G, 2 SH, 4 A). His lone playoff appearance did yield three points (1 G, 2 A) despite losing to eventual silver medalist Erie Cathedral Prep.

Jimmy Perkins – Quaker Valley

Regular Season: 22 GP, 43 G, 29 A, 10 PP, 2 SH, 12 GW, 3.27 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 5 G, 8 A, 1 PP, 4.33 PTS/GM

Notes: He led Class A in goals and points while pacing the entire league in game-winners by far. He was good for a point in every game, failing to exceed one only twice. He managed five hat tricks, one of them coming during his season-high eight-point night against South Park on January 13 (5 G, 1 GW, 3 A). He remained productive as the Quakers captured their third straight championship, posting four points (1 G, 3 A) in the quarterfinals against south Fayette, four more against Freeport in the semis (3 G, 1 PP, 1 A), and he played a perfectly happy second banana to Connor Quinn at Consol Energy Center versus Thomas Jefferson with five points (1 G, 4 A).

2013-14 MSA SPORTS NETWORK “ALL ICERS” – SECOND TEAM

Brian Baker – Peters Township

Regular Season: 11 GP, 482 MIN, 8-3-0, 2.22 GAA, 0.919 SV%, 1 SO

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 153 MIN, 3-0-0, 1.33 GAA, 0.938 SV%

Notes: He did not top Class AAA in any regular season statistical category, ranking second in save percentage. His lone shutout featured 20 saves against North Allegheny on February 11. He made a season-high 29 stops on 31 shots against Seneca Valley on January 7. It was the postseason where Baker got a stranglehold on the spotlight, stopping 25 shots in the quarterfinals against Seneca Valley, made 35 saves in the semis over Penn-Trafford and a staggering 41 in the gold medal game to defeat Bethel Park.

Christian Miller – Armstrong

Regular Season: 22 GP, 46 G, 15 A, 11 PP, 2 SH, 4 GW, 2.77 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 2 GP, 3 G, 3 A, 1 PP, 3.00 PTS/GM

Notes: This list is incomplete without the leading goal scorer in the PIHL, and he also tied with Cole Helper of Freeport atop all four classifications in power play tallies. He was only held off the score sheet once by Bishop Canevin and managed at least two points in 18 contests. He collected eight hat tricks, hitting four goals three times. His season-high five points was accomplished twice, first on November 7 against Moon (4 G, 1 A) and later on December 19 against North Hills (3 G, 2 PP, 1 GW, 2 A). Most of his playoff points came in the quarterfinals against Latrobe with two goals, one on the man advantage, and two helpers.

Connor Quinn – Quaker Valley

Regular Season: 21 GP, 33 G, 37 A, 9 PP, 3 SH, 5 GW, 3.33 PTS/GM

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 7 G, 6 A, 1 PP, 4.33 PTS/GM

Notes: Led Class A in assists. He was only held off the score sheet once while managing at least two points in 18 games. He scored in bunches, picking up five hat tricks, and he managed four goals on three of those nights. His season-high in points, though, came as part of a two-goal, five-assist performance against Mars on February 10. As for his playoff performance, do we really have to remind you of his five-goal, one-assist outburst in the Penguins Cup final? He also picked up four points in the quarterfinals over South Fayette (2 G, 2 A) and set up three goals in the semifinal thriller against Freeport.

Parker Sherry – Quaker Valley

Regular Season: 18 GP, 867 MIN, 17-1-0, 1.88 GAA, 0.918 SV%, 2 SO

Penguins Cup Playoffs: 3 GP, 153 MIN, 3-0-0, 2.00 GAA, 0.854 SV%

Notes: Led Class A starters in wins, GAA and save percentage. He made 29 saves in a shutout of Westmont Hilltop on December 9, but his season-high was 33 stops on 35 shots against Mars on February 10. He also turned aside 26 out of 27 against Freeport on November 11 and 25 of 26 against the Hilltoppers on February 4. His postseason included 19 saves on 21 shots in defeating Thomas Jefferson for the gold medal.

Tyler Manna – Harbor Creek

Regular Season: 20 GP, 1,020 MIN, 19-1-0, 1.50 GAA, 0.919 SV%, 7 SO

Open Cup Playoffs: 4 GP, 204 MIN, 3-1-0, 2.75 GAA, 0.885 SV%, 1 SO

Notes: Led all Open Class starters in wins and GAA. Some of his shutouts admittedly featured very low shot totals, but two of them stand out with a 24-save performance against Wheeling Central Catholic on January 12 and 17 stops against Blackhawk on February 13. He also stopped 39 of 41 McDowell shots on two separate occasions, both wins, on November 14 and December 19. He opened his playoff run with a 17-save shutout of John Marshall and later stopped 22 out of 23 to defeat Morgantown for the Southwest Cup.

Logan Conboy – Harbor Creek

Regular Season: 19 GP, 34 G, 33 A, 3 PP, 2 SH, 3 GW, 3.53 PTS/GM

Open Cup Playoffs: 4 GP, 5 G, 9 A, 4 PP, 3.50 PTS/GM

Notes: Led the Open Class with 67 points. He recorded at least a point in every game, getting at least two in 16 of them. He notched six hat tricks. Two of those came on eight-point nights against OLSH, first on December 9 (5 G, 3 A) and later on January 23 (3 G, 1 PP, 5 A). He also put up seven points (4 G, 3 A) against McDowell on December 19. His contributions to the Southwest Cup title included eight points (3 G, 5 A) in quarterfinals over John Marshall and three points (1 G, 2 A) in the semis against Beaver. He also mustered one goal and one assist in the Open Cup loss to Baldwin.
