PIAA will let Woodland Hills, Charleroi fix enrollment mistakes, avoid promotion to higher classifications

The PIAA will let Woodland Hills and Charleroi fix mistakes the schools made when submitting their enrollments, errors that would’ve forced their teams into higher classifications.

The board voted Wednesday to approve the requests from the two WPIAL members along with two schools from other PIAA districts that also made mistakes.

“The board accepted the explanations as submitted by the schools,” PIAA executive director Bob Lombardi said.

Woodland Hills was facing a move to Class 6A in multiple sports, including football. Charleroi was five boys above the cutoff for remaining in Class 2A football. Lombardi said the schools will be placed in the correct classifications.

Requests by Forest City Regional and Northern Cambria to fix enrollment mistakes also were approved by the PIAA board.

Voluntary upgrades

Teams from 10 WPIAL schools chose to voluntarily compete in a higher classification for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. The teams choosing to “play up” were:

• Bishop Canevin boys basketball (Class 3A)

• Eden Christian boys basketball (2A)

• Imani Christian football (3A) and boys basketball (6A)

• Mapletown boys basketball (2A)

• Central Catholic baseball (6A) and football (6A)

• Sewickley Academy boys basketball (2A)

• Shady Side Academy girls soccer (2A), boys and girls tennis (3A) and boys and girls lacrosse (3A)

• Upper St. Clair boys and girls basketball (6A) and girls soccer (4A)

• Union football (2A)

• Waynesburg wrestling (3A)
