Mechanicsburg’s talented big men proved to be too much for North Allegheny (20-6) to overcome, as the District 3 runner-up Wildcats tamed the Tigers, 43-22, in a fourth round consolation match today at the PIAA Team Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

North Allegheny led early, 6-0, on the strength of decisions by sophomores Domenic Forys (113 pounds) and Blynn Shideler (120 pounds). The Wildcats’ Tristan Skelly then knotted the match at 6-6 with a fall at 126 pounds. The Tigers regained the lead briefly at 10-6 as sophomore Jesse Rodgers tallied a convincing 14-1 major decision over Kyle Shuler at 138 pounds. But it would prove to be the final lead of the match for North Allegheny.

With six of its upper weight wrestlers ranked among the top ten in the state in their respective weight classes, Mechanicsburg (17-2) dominated the remainder of the match, winning eight of the final ten bouts. The Tigers only wins were by senior Jarred Lux (182 pounds) and sophomore Scotty Stossel (106 pounds), both the recipients of forfeits.

In its first trip to the state team championships, North Allegheny had a very solid tournament, going 3-2 and finishing among the top six teams in the state. With a talented group of underclassmen, look for the Tigers to be in the hunt for a return trip to Chocolate Town next season.

NOTES – The 1:00pm finals are now set. In Class AAA, WPIAL champion Canon-McMillan, the #1-ranked team in the state, and District 10 winner McDowell will wrestle for gold, while Central Dauphin and Mechanicsburg will meet for bronze in a rematch of the District 3 final. Central Dauphin defeated the Wildcats in that meeting last Saturday, 35-22. In Class AA, heavily favored Bethlehem Catholic, the District 11 champ, will battle the top team out of District 3, Boiling Springs for the gold medal. The bronze medal Class AA match features Brookville, the District 9 champion, against Fort Leboeuf, the champion of District 10.

North Allegheny Marches On, Edges Delaware Valley

Despite losing five of the first six bouts, North Allegheny (20-5) came roaring back for a 33-31 win over District 1 champion Delaware Valley (18-6) in a third round consolation match this morning at the PIAA Team Championships held at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

With the match starting at 106 pounds, sophomore Domenic Forys (fall at 113 pounds) was the Tigers only victorious wrestler during the lightweight bouts as Delaware Valley built an 18-6 lead. North Allegheny junior Ben Schweiger stopped the bleeding with a fall at 145 pounds over the Warriors’ Evan Wagner.

After a major decision victory for Delaware Valley at 152 pounds, Tigers’ sophomore Colt Byerly cut the lead to 22-18 with a second period pin of Dan Favaro. The Warriors, however, bounced back with a big 3-2 win by #7-ranked Marc Wagner over North Allegheny junior Alex DeCiantas, ranked #12 in the state. With just four bouts remaining in the match, Delaware Valley led 25-18.

But the Tigers big men went to work as seniors Jarred Lux (182 pounds) and Nate Nachazel (220 pounds) recorded falls and freshman Zach Smith won by decision at 195 pounds. With an insurmountable eight point lead, North Allegheny head coach Jamie Kyriazis decided to forfeit the final bout at heavyweight to the Warriors.

NOTES – North Allegheny, the WPIAL runner-up, only won six of the fourteen bouts, but five of those victories were by fall. Delaware Valley only registered one fall during the match. After a close first round loss to McDowell, WPIAL champion Canon-McMillan’s opponent in this afternoon’s championship final, the Tigers have reeled off three straight wins in the consolation bracket. North Allegheny will attempt to keep the ball rolling with a fourth round consolation match this morning at 11:00am against District 3 runner-up Mechanicsburg.
