Perry is Golden in City League Football Title Game

The Perry Commodores used a big play offense and a suffocating defense to win their 16th City League football championship with a 32-0 win over the Brashear Bulls at Cupples Stadium.

Greg McGhee was named the game's MVP, rushing for 70 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns and throwing for 171 yards and a score.

Perry took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field, going 78 yards in 12 plays, capped by Chinelo Oparanozie's five yard run. The Commodores had several chances to add on to the lead, but Oparanozzie and McGhee fumbled in Brashear territory.

The Bulls could not take advantage of the turnovers, with a lot of help from the Perry defense, which held the Bulls to minus nine yards of offense in the first half. Brashear also committed six penalties for 44 yards.

McGhee scored his ninth rushing touchdown of the season on a swift 40 yard cutback move to give Perry a 12-0 lead. The Commodores had another chance to add on, but McGhee came up short on a completion to Keenan Jackson on a jump ball at the ten yard line on the final play of the half.

Brashear took the opening kickoff in the third quarter and again went three and out, Perry took advantage quickly as McGhee hit Devin Ghafoor over the middle, Ghafoor made two moves and took it down the sidelines for a 69 yard touchdown and an 18-0 lead. McGhee added a 2 yard touchdown run with 4:49 remaining in the third, a two point conversion made it 26-0.

The Bulls went to Bryant at quarterback, he was able to pick up Brashear's only first down of the contest on the next drive, but Bryant was intercepted by Ghafoor on the next play to end the drive.

Perry added a touchdown in the fourth on a Robert Willie 4 yard run.

The Commodores ended up with 197 yards rushing, led by McGhee. Oparanozzie ran 19 times for 58 yards. Perry did fumble six times, losing three and picked up 18 first downs. The Perry defense held Brashear to 3 yards rushing and minus 2 yards passing, when told that after the game, head coach Bill Gallagher gave credit to his defensive coaches and his kids for doing a great job of wrapping up the Bulls runners.

Brashear committed three turnovers and 11 penalties for 79 yards. The Bulls end the season at 6-5.

Perry is now 11-1 overall, the Commodores will meet the State College Little Lions(6-5), the District 6 champions in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. That game will be Friday night at 7 pm on the MSA Sports Network.
