Perennial power named Trib HSSN Softball Team of the Week

The Trib HSSN Softball Team of the Week is Chartiers-Houston, a perennial power that took over first place in Section 2-2A with a pair of wins last week.
The Buccaneers are 9-1 in the section heading into the final week of the regular season, a game up in the loss column on Frazier (10-2).
The difference is a win last Monday for Chartiers-Houston over Carmichaels, six days after the Mighty Mikes beat the Commodores.
“Any section win at this point is a big win,” Chartiers-Houston coach Tricia Alderson said. “The Carmichaels win was great because we played excellent defense in a tight game, and Carmichaels is always a tough place to play.”
The back-to-back shutout wins over Carmichaels, 2-0, and Beth-Center, 8-0, make it three wins in a row for the Bucs and eight victories in their last 10 games.
Alderson said it truly has been a team effort.
“We have 13 girls (one is injured), and all 13 have made contributions along the way,” she said. “Our pitchers have done a great job on the mound. Our entire defense has played pretty well overall, led by four upperclassmen in the infield. Offensively, we have been fairly solid 1 through 9. It seems like each game a different person is coming through in the clutch.”
Chartiers-Houston can clinch the section championship outright with wins over McGuffey on Monday and Bentworth on Tuesday.
“Each week we give the team a quote of the week,” Alderson said. “The last two words of last week’s quote were ‘Finish Strong.’ We hope we can finish out the section on a positive note as we move toward the playoffs.”
Playoff time is usually Chartiers-Houston’s time to shine. Since winning the school’s first WPIAL softball title 32 years ago, the Bucs have won eight district crowns and will be one of the favorites in this year’s 2019 postseason.
“I think the 2A field is very stacked with a lot of good teams,” Alderson said. “The teams that pitch well and play good defense, along with catching fire at the right time, will be hard to beat. I think it is going to be a very competitive field overall.”
