Penn-Trafford notebook: Turowski places 3rd at All-Mountain East tournament

Fairmont State junior Alex Turowski placed third overall and earned All-Mountain East Conference golf tournament team honors after shooting 5-over in the conference tournament at Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Warren, Ohio.

The Falcons finished fourth overall at the MEC Championship with a score of 925.

The Penn-Trafford grad had eight birdies in the tournament and shot a low round of 70 in the second round on Oct. 10. He finished the 54-hole tournament with a 75 in his final round. He had a 76 in round one.

On campus

Grove City: Local football players had an impact on Grove City’s 48-21 win over Geneva that updated the Wolverines’ record to 6-0 (6-0 PAC).

Senior Cole DeFillippo (Penn-Trafford) returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, sophomore running back Ian Demari (Penn-Trafford) had a rushing TD, and senior cornerback Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) had eight tackles and an interception in the victory.

Cal (Pa.): Sophomore men’s soccer player AJ Visco (Penn-Trafford) made a career-high six saves in a 1-0 loss to Shippensburg.

Carlow: Sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Hess (Greensburg Central Catholic) produced 20 kills, 16 digs and five service aces for an impressive performance, but the Celtics fell to Salem, 3-2. Other county players on the roster include freshman Giovanna Jones (Latrobe), freshman Elliott Althof (Greensburg Central Catholic), sophomore Gabby Serrao (Belle Vernon) and senior Meghan Alexander (Penn-Trafford).

Hershberger’s goals beat Latrobe

Ava Hershberger scored both goals to help the Warriors field hockey team defeat Latrobe, 2-1, in a WPIAL Class 2A showdown. The winner came on a penalty shot.

The Warriors improved to 5-0 in the section and played host to Fox Chapel (4-1) in a first-place showdown. The Warriors defeated the Foxes, 4-2, in the first meeting.

The Warriors also recently defeated North Allegheny, 2-1, in a nonconference battle. Mackenzie Keenan and Rilie Moors scored goals for the Warriors (13-2 overall).

P-T netters fall in playoffs

Penn-Trafford’s girls tennis team saw its season come to an end during the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs last week.

The No. 8-seeded Warriors fell to No. 9 Upper St. Clair, 4-1, on Oct. 9 at Norwin.

Amelia Williams won in first singles for the Warriors.

Girls volleyball stays atop standings

Penn-Trafford’s girls volleyball team improved to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the Section 3-3A standings following another 3-0 victory against Shaler.

That followed a 3-0 win over Norwin on Sept. 26, a 3-2 victory over Hempfield on Oct. 3, and a 3-0 triumph over Fox Chapel on Oct. 5.

The Warriors locked up up the section title heading into last Thursday’s matches. Hempfield (4-2), Shaler (2-4), Fox Chapel (2-5) and Norwin (1-5) rounded out the standings.

Penn-Trafford was ranked fourth in the latest Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association poll, trailing North Allegheny (9-0), Canon-McMillan (11-2) and Seneca Valley (10-2) in Class 4A.

The Warriors were to conclude the regular season at Norwin.

The WPIAL playoff pairings will be announced Friday (Oct. 20).
