Penn Hills softball, baseball players earn postseason honors

Even though the Penn Hills baseball and softball programs didn’t have the type of seasons they were hoping for, five players from the two programs received all-section honors for their play this year.

The Indians were headlined by junior center fielder and pitcher Yasmine Logan, who received Western PA Big 56 Section 2-5A first-team all-section honors.

This is the second year in a row Logan was on the first team.

“This year means more since last year I had a set position in center field while this year I didn’t have a set position,” Logan said.

“You couldn’t say I just played this position since I played numerous positions.”

Logan was joined by senior first baseman Makayla Delo, who received second-team all-section honors in her final season.

Last year, Delo received honorable mention honors.

Logan hit .667 batting with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 15 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

Delo batted .512 batting with three doubles, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

The Indians finished with a 5-10 overall record, including a 5-9 mark in Section 2-5A. Last year, they won two games while playing in Class 6A.

The Indians won two of three games to finish the season. Penn Hills came from behind to defeat Mars, 17-16, in section play May 1. Logan had the game-winning walk-off hit to cap the Indians’ win.

“I was dreaming it when I went into the batters box. I just had all the pressure on me. I just calmed down and knew it was one of the best feelings I could have,” Logan said.

After a 10-0 loss to Shaler on May 2, the Indians rebounded to finish with a 14-4 win over Woodland Hills in section play May 7.

On the baseball diamond, the Indians were headlined by junior outfielder and pitcher Cameron Clark, who received Section 1-5A second-team all-section honors.

Last season, Clark was an honorable mention selection in his first season at Penn Hills.

“Cameron Clark should’ve been first team this year,” coach Jerry Cammuso said.

“He tracked down every baseball in the outfield and was throwing kids out. He hits, he steals, he fields and he pitches. This kid does the whole nine yards. He got robbed.”

Junior pitcher and shortstop Cole Yeager and sophomore corner infielder and pitcher Josh Zambito each received honorable mention honors this season.

Yeager was the ace of the pitching staff, facing the top teams in Class 5A, while Clark and Zambito made contributions on the mound.

“It’s a pretty big deal with me being a sophomore. I could’ve done better this year, especially with hitting. I was expecting a lot for myself, and my coaches and teammates were expecting a lot,” Zambito said.

Cammuso was hoping to see sophomore Anthony Sciulli and junior AJ Collins recognized for their play this year.

The team didn’t include a senior in the starting lineup and finished with a 3-12 overall record, with a 3-9 mark in Section 1-5A.

The youth on the team got to experience how to battle in close games, but they couldn’t get over the hump in games against Hampton, Gateway, Kiski Area and Fox Chapel.

“We’re a team, we’re a squad. You can’t have a couple guys doing it all. I feel like there were several other guys who didn’t get honored who deserved to. I think the next couple years there are going to be a lot of different guys that will compete,” Zambito said.

“We learned how to bond together. Not having any starting seniors this year, we know we’re going to bring back the same exact players next year. We learned how to be a team, and that’s not going to change.”
