Daemar Kelly was a 1,000- point scorer and catalyst for the Penn Hills boys basketball team that won the Class 5A WPIAL championship. After a year at Quinnipiac, Kelly announced he would be transferring.
Kelly recently announced he will be playing for St. Francis (Pa.) in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash finished 8-22 overall last season and 3-11 in conference play.
St. Francis coach Rob Krimmel said in a news release he was happy to have Kelly in the program.
“Daemar is a winner,” Krimmel said. “He has been a part of successful programs at all levels and will provide some experience to our team. He is a versatile guard who can score in a variety of ways.”
Kelly played 23 minutes during his freshman season and finished with eight points.
Quinnipiac finished 24-10 and lost in the Metro Athletic Conference semifinals.
The Bobcats then lost in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.
Brayton earns honors
Penn Hills graduate Lucy Brayton saved her best round for last at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship in Youngstown, Ohio. Brayton, a freshman at Saint Vincent College, finished with the second-best round of the day by shooting a 79.
Over the four-round tournament, Brayton finished with a total score of 342 (93-85-85-79) to finish in eighth place overall and earn second-team All-PAC honors.
Allen places
Angelo Allen has steadily improved during his career at Seton Hill. During the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, Allen finished with a throw of 15.7 meters in the shot put to place seventh. As a team, the Griffins placed eighth at the event, which was held at Shippensburg University.
Girls rugby finds success
The Big Red rugby team wanted to have a successful maiden voyage for its girls rugby program. Penn Hills teamed up with NorthPitt United to do exactly that. The Big Red went 3-0 in a round-robin 7s event.
Austin collects hits
Philmore Austin helped provide a spark during a difficult season for the Penn Hills baseball program.
The Indians senior hit .353 and contributed five extra-base hits. Austin contributed at least four extra-base hits during his final three seasons with the Penn Hills program.
