Norwin notebook: Track team swarms medal stand

Norwin had a number of athletes competing at the Tri-State Coaches Association Championships at West Mifflin.

Most of them made it to the medal stand.

Luke Denny won the 400-meter run in 50.53 seconds, and Nick Puskar was the pole vault champion (19-1), while the Knights’ 1,600 relay of Nicholas Bognar, Theodore Ola, Eliezer Nicolas and Denny took first in 3:30.32.

The 400 relay was second (44.35).

Alex Irwin finished fourth in the pole vault (13-1); Carter Tobin was fourth in the 100 (11.82) and sixth in the 200 (23.02); Ryan Schiller took fourth (15.70) and Jeremiah Francis sixth (16.39) in the 110 hurdles; Tyler Beck finished fifth (41.83), Francis was seventh (42.75) and Schiller eighth (43.18) in the 300 hurdles; Gage Mamie was seventh (41-2.25) and Jeremiah Francis (40-0) eight in the triple jump; and Logan Irvin was eighth in the javelin (145-6).

For the Norwin girls, Melani Schmidt was second in the 400 (58.79), fourth in the 100 (13.37) and fifth in the 200 (26.38); Annie Cajkowski was second in the 800 (2:22.40) and third in the 1,600 (5:18.51); Alexis Heller was fourth in the javelin (116-1) and seventh in the shot put (30-0); Casey Rose Colcombe took sixth in the 110 hurdles (17.32), fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.58) and seventh in the high jump (4-9); Myla McCabe took seventh in the 400 (1:01.60); Julia Walko was seventh in the 1,600 (5:22.77); the 400 relay finished fifth (51.22); Natalie Aquilio was fifth in the high jump (4-11); Brandi Brozeski was seventh in the long jump (16-6).

More track

Norwin also had athletes at the Spartan/Wildcat Invitational and the Lady Spartan Invitational. Both meets were at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium.

For the boys, Callum Turner finished fourth (131-6) and Sauly Guyaux was eighth (118-8) in the discus, Austin Hladek was seventh in the 400 (53.92), Owen Rankin took seventh in the 3,200 (10:30.55), and the 3,200 relay was seventh (9:12.67). Guyaux also took eighth in the javelin (138-8).

Jillian Ryba was fifth (11:46.94), Addison Farrah sixth (11:56.08) and Anna Dansak eighth (12:24.63) in the 3,200 ; Elizabeth Cupp was seventh in the long jump (14-2.25); Emily Dansak finished seventh in the 800 (2:35.93); and the 1,600 relay took eighth (4:44.57).

Baseball wins

Norwin salvaged the rubber game of a section series against Canon-McMillan, winning 9-5 as Nate Silberman went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI, and William Griffiths drove in a pair.

The Knights (5-4, 3-2) were in third place in Section 2-6A.

Softball slides

The Norwin softball team (3-4, 2-3) dropped to sixth place in the Class 6A section after losing three of four games.

After losses to Butler (6-1) and Seneca Valley (3-0), the Knights defeated Baldwin, 4-3, and fell to North Allegheny, 6-5, in the bottom of the seventh.

Seneca Valley has one of the best pitchers in the nation in Lexie Hames, a Clemson commit. But Norwin wouldn’t let the senior ace pitch her first seven-inning no-hitter of the season.

Hames was superb, striking out 20, but Kendall Dudley broke up her no-hit bid with a single in the seventh inning.

Volleyball update

Norwin boys volleyball blanked Penn Hills, 3-0, to continue its strong play of late.

The Knights, ranked No. 3 in the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Top 10 in Class 3A, got 10 kills from junior middle hitter Nick Puskaric, who was recently named the association’s player of the week.
