The North Allegheny girls volleyball team was honored Thursday for finishing its fall season ranked No. 27 in MaxPreps’ national rankings.

At an afternoon assembly, Tigers coach Heidi Miller and her players received the Army National Guard national ranking trophy from Staff Sergeant Christopher Macy, a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. North Allegheny went 24-0 and won the PIAA Class 4A championship Nov. 18.

MaxPreps and the National Guard combine to sponsor the Tour of Champions Award.

“This will bring one final exciting celebration to what has been an amazing season,” Miller said. “This is a special award for the girls.”

The MaxPreps Tour of Champions honored North Allegheny’s football team in 2010 and 2013.

Computer rankings are used to determine Tour of Champions teams. MaxPreps said its formula favors wins against highly-ranked opponents, margin of victory and strength of schedule. Playoff wins are weighted heavier than regular-season wins.
