North Allegheny notebook: Tigers top rival Pine-Richland in championship rematch

Defending PIAA Class 4A girls volleyball champion North Allegheny defeated reigning WPIAL Class 4A champion Pine-Richland, 3-1, in a Section 1 match Sept. 12.

Game scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-16.

Marin Dunaway had 17 kills, and Kyra Schmidt and Isabelle Hoppe had 13 kills.

Avery Butcher added 14 digs, and Molly Robertson had 34 assists as the Tigers improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Section 1.

Boys soccer tops Fox Chapel, North Hills

North Allegheny’s boys soccer team kept its unbeaten run going Sept. 12 with a 3-2 win over Fox Chapel.

The No. 2-ranked Tigers (8-0, 5-0) got goals from Zach Nash, Arnav Patel and Caleb Rumberger in the Section 1-4A win. Dante Accamando made nine saves.

Earlier in the week, Jadyn Coy had a hat trick to lead North Allegheny past North Hills, 9-0.

North Allegheny field hockey blanks Hempfield

Isla Abrams and Mia Brinkley each scored three goals, and Sophie Grafton and Addison Burns added goals to lead North Allegheny’s field hockey team to an 8-0 win over Hempfield on Sept. 13.

The victory helped the Tigers improve to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Section 1-3A.

Tigers girls soccer moves to 8-0

North Allegheny’s girls soccer team scored a 4-3 win over Fox Chapel on Sept. 13 to improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Section 1-4A.

Abigail Stager scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute. It was her second of the game. Jadyn Coy and Gracie Strzempek also scored for the Tigers.

Ward’s 38 helps NA boys to victory

Colin Ward shot a 2-over-par 28 to lead North Allegheny’s boys golf team to a 195-204 win over Seneca Valley on Sept. 13, at Cranberry Highlands.

Ravi Desai, Liam Cooper and Jake Watterson shot 39, and Chris Hoffman had a 40 for the Tigers (11-3, 6-3).

PIAA changes enrollment policy

Public schools will see their enrollments increase in the next few months, at least according to PIAA statistics.

The PIAA is changing the formula it uses to count school enrollments, so some sports teams might unexpectedly move to a different classification for the 2024-25 school year.

Currently, school districts count only 10% of students attending class in an alternate setting, such as a vo-tech, charter school, cyber charter or homeschool, but they’ll need to count 100% of those students moving forward. The change affects only public school enrollments, since private schools don’t have charter or vo-tech students.

The 10% rule was in place since 2016.

“Where we think you’ll see the changes is in the smaller areas, the smaller public schools,” PIAA associate executive director Melissa Mertz said. “If you think about it, they were the ones who were probably benefiting the most from that 10%. They have a lot of kids go into those vo-techs and so forth. I don’t think you’ll see as big of an impact on the big schools.”

The PIAA collects enrollment numbers every two years before sorting the teams into classifications. It counts boys and girls in grades 9, 10 and 11. School administrators will begin submitting updated numbers Oct. 1 for the next realignment, impacting the 2024-25 and 2025-26 sports seasons.
