North Allegheny notebook: Tigers girls soccer wins 3rd straight Section 1 title

North Allegheny’s girls soccer team locked up the Section 1-4A championship on Oct. 11 with an 8-0 victory over Allderdice at Newman Stadium.

Abigail Stager, Jadyn Coy and Gracie Strzempek scored twice each and Emma Schupansky and Kieran Shannon added goals. Natalie Rak and Margaret Nestor combined for the shutout, which was the 11th of the season for North Allegheny.

Stager has 27 goals this season for the Tigers (16-0, 13-0), who have won three straight section titles.

Tennis team advances in WPIAL playoffs

The North Allegheny girls tennis team shut out Baldwin, 5-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs on Oct. 9.

The No. 2 Tigers then beat No. 7 Pine-Richland, 4-1, in the quarterfinals Oct. 11.

Laeticia Wessel and Peyton Mauser won singles matches in straight sets.

Audrey Zheng/Tia Soussou won 7-6(5), 7-5 at first doubles, and Siya Jain/Rebecca Murphy won 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles.

The Tigers (17-1) were scheduled to play Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals.

NA boys edge Central Catholic

Zach Nash scored on a free kick early in the second half to give North Allegheny’s boys soccer team a 1-0 victory over Central Catholic on Oct. 10.

Dante Accamando made four saves to secure the shutout, the team’s fifth of the season.

The Tigers improved to 13-0-3 overall and 10-0-3 in Section 1-4A.

Tigers hockey off to 2-0 start

North Allegheny’s ice hockey team won its first two games of the season last week.

The Tigers beat Mt. Lebanon, 5-2, on Oct. 5. Mark Joyson scored three times, and Ed Scherer and Luke Walkauskas added goals. Andrew Long made 20 saves.

On Oct. 10, North Allegheny (2-0) beat Peters Township, 2-1. Travis Lamark and Joyson scored for North Allegheny, and Camden Junker made 29 saves to secure the win.

North Allegheny golfers advance to WPIALs

The North Allegheny boys golf team qualified for the WPIAL team championships after taking first at the Class 3A semifinal Oct. 10 at Duck Hollow Golf Course.

The Tigers combined to shoot 391 to edge Fox Chapel (398) and South Fayette (400), among others.

Ravi Desai shot 1-over par 73, followed b y Colin Ward (75), Jake Watterson (79) and Jacob Phrampus (81). Colin Rende and Chris Hoffman also competed.

Water polo team sweeps Cathedral Prep

North Allegheny’s boys and girls water polo teams scored wins over Cathedrial Prep on Oct. 10.

The boys (10-4) won 13-11 behind four goals from Grant Regule and three more from Camden Wright. Matthew Woods and Jonathan Mowry had two apiece.

Carissa Jones scored four times, and Mikaela Dassanaike had three as the North Allegheny girls (11-5) won 12-6.

Field hockey team blanks Hempfield

North Allegheny scored a 10-0 victory over Hempfield in a Section 1-3A field hockey match Oct. 9.

Addison Burns, Isla Abrams and Sophie Grafton all had three goals, and Josie Schomburg added a goal.

Alaina Roth and Kayla Joyce combined for the shutout, as the Tigers improved to 6-7-2 overall and 4-3-2 in section play.

Tigers compete at Head of the Ohio

North Allegheny’s rowing teams opened the fall season Oct. 8 at the Head of the Ohio in downtown.

Despite high winds and rough water, Madison Lambert and Madelyn Rodgers combined for a gold medal in the Women’s U17 2x.

The Tigers women’s U19 4x of Alexandra Witzel, Sawyer Wright, Katherine Zema and Lorelei Schreiber finished second.

North Allegheny’s Men’s U17 4x of Christian Sperandeo, Nikhil Kshirsagar, Suraj Raina and Nolan Bunn earned second place.

And, the Tigers finished third in the Men’s U19 4x with The Men’s U19 4x brought home bronze and looks to hold their placement just above Westerville Rowing next weekend Miles Reese, Anthony Bertucci, Josh Dubovecky and Carson Carona.
