North Allegheny notebook: Soccer teams among top seeds in WPIAL playoffs

North Allegheny’s unbeaten girls soccer was awarded the No. 1 seed for the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs on Oct. 18.

The Tigers (18-0) will host Mt. Lebanon (10-5-2) in the opening round Thursday (Oct. 26) at Newman Stadium.

The Tigers capped the regular season with a 6-0 win over Norwin on Oct. 18.

Kieran Shannon and Abigail Stager each had two goals, and Rowan Barsotti and Ally Ruiz also scored. Natalie Rak posted the shutout for the Tigers.

NA boys awarded No. 2 seed

The North Allegheny boys soccer team earned the No. 2 seed when the WPIAL playoff pairings were announced Oct. 18.

The Tigers (14-1-3) will host No. 7 Canon-McMillan (10-6-1) on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Newman Stadium in the opening round.

Section 1 rival Seneca Valley (13-0-3), which beat NA, 2-0, and tied the Tigers, was awarded the No. 1 seed.

Tigers volleyball wins section title

North Allegheny girls volleyball locked up the Section 1-4A title Oct. 17 with a 3-0 win over Seneca Valley, 28-26, 25-23 and 25-17.

Jamie Frisco had 14 kills, Marin Dunaway ad nine kills, and Molly Robertson had eight kills. Caileigh Duffy had four aces.

The top-ranked Tigers improved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in Section 1.

Tennis team falls in WPIAL finals

North Allegheny’s girls tennis team suffered its second loss of the season in the WPIAL finals Oct. 18, falling to Bethel Park, 5-0, at Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center at Washington & Jefferson College.

“They’ve been so resilient. They’ve all stepped up at some point this season and done their part,” North Allegheny coach Michelle Weniger said. “I’m extremely proud of my girls. They came to compete, and Bethel Park made a really good match.”

The Tigers will be off to Erie in the opening round of the Class 3A PIAA team tennis championships. North Allegheny will play either the District 4 or District 6 champion at a time to be determined.

Football team rolls past Norwin

Khiryn Boyd returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and added a 7-yard scoring run in Class 6A No. 2 North Allegheny’s 37-point first quarter as it scored a 53-25 win over Class 5A Norwin (2-6) Oct. 13.

Logan Kushner threw for one touchdown and ran for another for North Allegheny (7-1).

Chang earns bronze at World event

Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate Club athlete and North Allegheny student Connor Chang won a bronze medal at the World Karate Federation Youth League championship in Merida, Mexico, Sept. 24.

The event in Mexico hosted more than 700 athletes from 40 countries.

In the bronze medal match, Chang defeated the reigning 12-13 55-plus kg champion from the Junior Pan American Championships held in Chile last month. Chang also competed with Team USA in Chile.

NA field hockey falls in finale

The North Allegheny field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Pine-Richland Oct. 18.

Isla Abrams scored and Kayla Joyce made 20 saves for the Tigers, who enter the playoffs with an 8-8-2 record.

North Allegheny and four-time defending champ Pine-Richland (17-0) will face off in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals Oct. 28.

Slow-pitch softball team finishes strong

North Allegheny’s slow-pitch softball team finished as the regular season champions and earned the No. 1 seed for the WPISL playoffs.

The Tigers (12-2) beat Baldwin, 23-1 and 47-1, in a doubleheader.
