There are three things that are constants in life — death, taxes and North Allegheny winning a sports cup in the district’s highest classification.
No matter what network name you put in front, North Allegheny has claimed the sports cup every year for the last decade and a half and usually in runaway fashion.
Such was the case again in the 2017-18 Class 6A chase for the Trib HSSN Cup. North Allegheny nearly doubled the field in cruising to the title.
The TribLive High School Sports Network Cup is a yearlong competition to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification. It awards points for section/conference wins, district/state playoff wins and district/state championships and runners-up.
Schools can earn 1 point for section/conference wins, 2 points for any postseason victory, 10 points for a WPIAL championship, 5 points for district runner-up, 20 points for a PIAA championship and 15 points for state runner-up.
“This was an awesome year,” said North Allegheny athletic director Bob Bozzuto, who is starting his third decade as head of athletics.
“Our kids do a fantastic job. Our coaches do a great job. We have the support of teachers, central administration and the school board.”
North Allegheny won nine WPIAL team titles and six PIAA crowns to earn 501 points and finish 250 points in front of second-place Pine-Richland.
“This was an awesome year in every way possible,” Bozzuto said, “both athletically with 15 championships and academically with our athletes averaging a 3.8 grade-point average.”
North Allegheny won WPIAL championships in boys soccer, girls volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf, girls basketball, boys and girls swimming, boys volleyball and boys track.
The Tigers claimed state gold in girls volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf, boys swimming, boys volleyball and boys track.
The fact that North Allegheny has dominated the district’s highest classification since this sports cup competition started 15 years ago is quite an accomplishment, as great athletes have come and gone but the black and gold machine keeps churning out championships.
“Success breeds success,” Bozzuto said. “We have a tradition of excellence. Our kids feel that way and work hard. Our coaches and trainers are tremendous. There are life-long lessons that are learned. Be the best they can be.”
