NA’s Owens wins national hurdles title, breaks state record

North Allegheny hurdler Ayden Owens won a national title Sunday and set a state record at the same time.
The senior won the 60-meter hurdles at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in 7.59 seconds, shaving more than a tenth of a second off his personal best. Owens’ time broke a state record set in 1995 by Deworski Odom of Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School, according to Milesplit.com.
Owens won Sunday ahead of Germantown Academy’s Kyle Garland (7.74), who Owens battled Saturday in the pentathlon . The New Balance meet was at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York
Owens’ previous best in the 60-meter hurdles was 7.70 seconds at the TSTCA indoor meet Feb. 17. He ran 7.71 Saturday in the preliminary heats and 7.83 in the semifinals earlier Sunday.
Upper St. Clair’s Savannah Shaw was eighth in the girls mile (4:51.99) Sunday and Butler’s Noah Beveridge placed 18th in the boys mile (4:18.52).
