MSA Sports Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week One

One of the busiest Saturday's of the WPIAL football season happened to be on the opening weekend of this 2010 campaign. There were nine game involving District 7 teams, including four games in The Rally at the Wolvarena in Turtle Creek. Here are the top five performers from the first Saturday of the season.

Louis Taglianetti – Pittsburgh Central Catholic

The only WPIAL team to win on Saturday in four games at the Rally at the Wolvarena turned out to be a SPECIAL victory for Pittsburgh Central Catholic. The Vikings dominated in special teams play, including two blocked punts by Louis Taglianetti, one of which was recovered at the Akron Buchtel 10-yard line to set up the games first score, the other was recovered in the end zone by Brandon Farrell for a touchdown that helped spark a 21-point burst in the final two and a half minutes of the third quarter leading the Vikings to a 35-6 victory over the Griffins.

Damion Jones-Moore – Pittsburgh Central Catholic

It was a tough start to the 2010 season for one of the top running backs in the WPIAL, but after a fumble led to an Akron Buchtel touchdown, Damion Jones-Moore picked it up…as did his Pittsburgh Central Catholic teammates. The junior rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries with two touchdown jaunts, including an 11-yard score that put the Vikings up for good in their season opening victory.

Andre Williams – Summit Academy

Andre Williams proved Saturday afternoon was a good day to be a Knight. Williams completed 8 of 11 passes for 107 yards and scoring tosses of 41 and 20 yards, plus he scored on a 59-yard touchdown run to lead the Summit Academy Knights to a victory over the Schenley Spartans.

Brady Kunsa – Monessen

While most teams were tuning up in non-conference action on opening weekend, it didn't take long for defending conference champion Monessen to feel at home atop the Class A Tri-County South. Quarterback Brady Kunsa was 6 of 8 passing for 132 yards and 39 yard touchdown strike, plus he added a short touchdown run as the Greyhounds dusted the Geibel Gators 51-8 in a TCS opener.

Brandon Seacrest – Riverview

He's no television star, but if he continues to run wild on the gridiron like he did Saturday, Brandon Seacrest may be the new host of a hit show in Oakmont this fall. Seacrest rushed for 215 yards on only EIGHT carries for a nifty 27 yards per carry average, plus he scored three long touchdown runs of 46, 27 and 91 yards to lead the Raiders to a 47-12 triumph over the Wilkinsburg Tigers in a Class A Eastern Conference opener.
