MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights – 09/10/2011

The conditions on Friday night were much better than they were a week ago for the district lid-lifters, allowing for more focus by the players and a lot more points scored by teams throughout the WPIAL. Impressive numbers were delivered by these ten athletes highlighting the second chapter of the 2011 WPIAL football book of wonders.

Manny Simpson – Penn-Trafford
Call it a coming out party for Manny Simpson and his Penn-Trafford mates as they sent notice to the rest of Class AAAA that they are a player by raining on the pink parade of fourth ranked host Mount Lebanon. Simpson finished 8-yards shy of three-bills as he gained 292 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Warriors impressive 34-17 eye-brow raiser over the Blue Devils.

Ryan Mincher – Shaler
It was a disastrous start to the 2011 season for the Shaler signal caller, who was injured early in a bad loss at Upper St. Clair. The bounce back for Ryan Mincher in Week Two was quite different than seven days earlier. Mincher completed 14 of 18 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns as the Titans rolled to a 34-13 victory over the Hempfield Spartans.

Eddie Stockett – McKeesport
A McKeesport quarterback making the HighLights is nothing new. Most times fans would wonder…how many yards did he run for? The Only thing Eddie Stockett ran was a productive aerial attack. Stockett was 7 of 9 passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers remained perfect with a convincing 47-7 rout of the Altoona Mountain Lions.

Rushell Shell – Hopewell
Lou Cerro has had some pretty good teams at Montour High School the last four years…but the one thing they could not do is slow down the great Rushell Shell. The sensational senior ended up with over 1,000 yards in four games against Montour, including 233 yards Friday with two touchdowns and the game winning score from 34-yards out with 1:34 left as the Vikings upended the top-ranked Spartans 22-19.

Mikal Hall – Aliquippa
Playing in front of HALL-of-Famer Joe Namath and going up against one of the top running backs in the district in Trey HALL of Beaver Falls, it was Aliquippa quarterback Mikal HALL who turned in one Hall of a performance. Mikal Hall was 10 of 19 passing for 217 yards with touchdown passes of 43 and 74 yards as the top ranked Quips shutout the third-ranked Beaver Falls Tigers 27-0 in an early season Midwestern Conference showdown in Class AA.

Kyle Crawford – Ellwood City
Early on, Ellwood City was trying to show everybody that 2010 was no fluke. So far, so good after two weeks thanks in large part to an offense that has posted 111 points in two Midwestern Conference wins. Much of the success Friday came on the legs of Kyle Crawford, who rushed for 268-yards and scored SIX touchdowns in the Wolverines 54-40 triumph over the host New Brighton Lions.

Dale Klobuchir – Keystone Oaks
Under Nik Kamberis, a lineman in his playing days, Keystone Oaks has always tried to beat opponents down on the ground. Matt McCann and Jordan Maddux graduate, no problem as junior Dale Klobuchir takes over the running reigns. Klobuchir rushed for 256 yards and scored five touchdowns on runs of 9, 1, 53, 4 and 63 yards as the Golden Eagles soared to a 52-28 win over the Burrell Buccaneers.

Dontez Williams – Steel Valley
Once they get into Century Conference play, it won’t come this easy for Steel Valley and Dontez Williams…or will it? After shining bright last week in a rout of Albert Gallatin, Williams had another huge night with 247 yards on the ground and five touchdowns, four of which were 42-yards or longer as the Ironmen cruised to a 42-6 non-conference spanking of the West Shamokin Wolves.

Kevin Hart – Seton-LaSalle
While there was a lot of star power shining Friday night at Shady Side Academy with several Division I recruits on both sides of the ball, it was visiting Seton-LaSalle that showed from kickoff to the game’s final whistle that they had a lot of Hart. Senior running back Kevin Hart rushed for 209 yards and scored four long touchdowns, including a return of the opening kickoff 85-yards as the 2nd-ranked Rebels pounded the 6th-ranked Indians 30-0.

De’Andre Moon – Rochester
While it may not have been visible because of the overcast skies Friday night, Fort Cherry was struck down in their non-conference Class A showdown with Rochester by a full Moon. De’Andre Moon gained 183 yards on the ground and added two touchdowns on runs of 50 and 76 yards in leading the Rams to a 34-12 victory over the host Rangers.
