Some blow outs and two overtime affairs highlight Week 1 of College Recap. Below are recaps of every district college football game from Thursday and Saturday, including three heard right here on the MSA Sports Network.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd:

Slippery Rock 51     Seton Hill 14
The 25th ranked Rock piled up 48 first half points on the way to a win at Offut Field in Greensburg. Akeem Satterfield ran for 125 yards on just 8 carries and the Rock scored two defensive touchdowns for a good start to 2011. It was a quick start to the season for Slippery Rock. Ken Amos took the opening kickoff back 96 yards. Daniel Butler answered that with a 4 yard run for the Griffins. LaQuinn Stephens-Howling scored on a 2 yard run, then the flood gates opened. Brandon Watters had a 50 yard interception return for a score and Satterfield added a 22 yard run, the Rock was up 28-7 after one and looking for more. More they found in the second quarter, Jayson Nickson tallied a 38 yard Pick 6, Following the kickoff, D.J. Lenehan fumbled on the first play, recovered by Jeff Thompson at the Seton Hill 8. Stephens-Howling scored on the next play to put the Rock up 42-7. Kurt Brackman tacked on two field goals of 25 and 41 yards to make the score 48-7. Seton Hill looked good on the first drive of the second half, Lenehan leading a 13 play effort, finishing with a 30 yard pass to Butler for his second score of the day. Brackman kicked a 43 yarder for the game’s final points. The Rock had 375 yards of offense, with 230 coming on the ground. Seton Hill had 195 yards of offense and 12 penalties for 126 yards. The Griffins were 1 of 15 on third down conversions.

W & J 40     Juniata 0
The 16th ranked Presidents rolled to the road win Saturday afternoon in Huntington.
Tim McNerney ran for 2 scores as W & J racked up 588 yards of offense with 31 first
downs in the win. McNerney picked up his first touchdown on the opening drive, going in from 29 yards. After a three and out for Juniata, the Presidents struck again. Matt Bliss, who was
named the starting quarterback this week, connected with Adam Domenick for 31 yards
and a score, putting W & J up 13-0. In the second quarter, McNerney scored his second touchdown on a 3 yard run, capping a 10 play drive. Bliss hooked up with Domenick again, this time on an 8 yarder with 39 seconds remaining in the half to put the Presidents up 26-0 at the break.
W & J added to the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter, Bliss to Alex Baroffio for a 37 yard score. DeAndre Simmons added a 1 yard run for the game’s final points. McNerney gained 84 yards on 14 carries. Bliss was 19 of 28 for 286 and 3 touchdowns. Baroffio had 7 catches for 133 yards, Domenick had 6 catches for 73 yards. The Presidents’ defense was key, allowing just 6 first downs and 68 yards of total offense.

Frostburg State 34     Geneva 21
Zach Hayward threw for 2 touchdowns but it was not enough as the Golden Tornadoes
fell at Reeves Field on Saturday night. Patrick Pinchinat scored three times on the
night to lead the Bobcats to the win. Pinchinat scored on the opening drive, on a 48 yard touchdown run to give Frostburg State the early lead. After a Geneva three and out, the GT’s found themselves down 14-0 as Josh Volpe connected with Pinchinat for a 73 yard score and a 14-0 lead.
Geneva drove but Bryan Visingardi missed a 30 yard field goal with 8:32 left in the
first. Geneva finished it’s next drive, Jordan Curry scored on a 1 yard run to cut
the Frostburg State lead in half. Geneva tied the game on their first possession of the second quarter, Hayward hitting A.J. Delmonico with a 33 yard touchdown pass, ending an 11 play drive. Two
possessions later, the Bobcats took advantage of a short punt to take back the lead.
Chuky Iweh scored from 4 out to take back the lead. In the third quarter, Geneva had a chance to cut the lead to four, but Visingardi missed a 34 yard field goal. Volpe matched the Bobcats down the field, finding Anthony Young for a 19 yard touchdown and a 27-14 lead. That score remained the same until halfway thru the fourth quarter, Hayward touched base with Corey O’Patchen for a 30 yard score. But Frostburg State took six minutes off the clock, Pinchinat scored with 1:26 left on a 9 yard run to seal the game. Pinchinat ran for 183 yards on 23 carries, he also had 2 catches for 84 yards. Volpe was 17 of 27 for 264. Young had 8 catches for 108 yards. For Geneva, Hayward was 23
of 42 for 299 yards. Delmonico had 8 catches for 109 yards.
 

Bucknell 27     Duquesne 26
Brandon Wesley scored on a fourth down run with 57 seconds left to give the Bison
the win on Saturday night. Wesley threw for 173 yards and a touchdown, former
Steel-High start Jeremiah Young ran for 105 yards for Bucknell. Sean Patterson threw two first half touchdown passes, 22 yards to Issac Spragg to open the scoring and 14 yards to Connor Dixon to stake the Dukes to a 13-3 lead, Dixon was just granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.  The Bison got two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half. Tim Bolte returned an interception
24 yards and Wesley hit Gabe Skwara for a 11 yard touchdown and a 17-16 lead at the
half. Larry McCoy scored his first touchdown of the season on the opening drive of the
second half to give Duquesne back the lead at 23-17, the teams traded field goals,
there was no further scoring until Wesley’s heroics. McCoy ran for 112 yards on 30 carries. Patterson threw for 188 yards, Spragg had 9 catches for 100 yards.

Dayton 19     Robert Morris 13.
The Flyers got two touchdown passes from Will Bardo and two field goals from Nate
Miller to hold on for the road win at Joe Walton Stadium. Bardo finished 14 of 24
for 180 yards. For RMU, quarterback Jeff Sinclair struggled, he was 13 of 29 for just 156 yards.
Sinclair did score on a 5 yard run in the second quarter. James Cromwell scored on a
1 yard run with 5:54 remaining to cut the Flyer lead to 6, but RMU got no closer.
Neither team ran the ball well, Dayton rushed for just 21 yards, Robert Morris ran
for 81, 71 coming from Duane Mitchell.

Wagner 38     Saint Francis 28
In the NEC opener, Dominique Williams posted 180 yards and 2 scores to give the
Seahawks the home win. Nick Doscher threw for 173 yards and two scores for Wagner.
Saint Francis was led by a healthy Kyle Harbridge, he ran for 154 yards and 2
scores. Quarterback John Kelly threw for 273 yards on 20 of 38 and two touchdowns,
he also was intercepted by Carl Prime, who returned it for a 37 yard Pick 6. A.J.
Alexander had 3 catches for 99 yards and a score for the Red Flash.

Mercyhurst 24     Notre Dame College 23  in Overtime
The 17th ranked Lakers jumped out to a 10-0 first half lead and got a missed extra
point in overtime to help Mercyhurst win the home opener at Tullio Field. Travis Rearick hit Trevor Kennedy for a 27 yard touchdown and Steven Wakefield added a 31 yard field goal, set up by a Linnel Robinson interception. Wakefield missed a 41 yarder on the final play of the half. Pedro Powell got Notre Dame on the board with a 30 yard touchdown run. Rearick answered midway thru the quarter with a 2 yard pass to Jeff Groene and a 17-7 lead. That didn’t last long, Dak Britt hit Randy Greenwood with a 53 yard touchdown just 3 plays later. Chris McLearn tied the game with 3:50 remaining with a 37 yard field goal. Wakefield came up short on a 55 yard attempt at the end of regulation. On the first play of overtime, Notre Dame scored on a double pass as Jack Foy caught a pass from Rob Partridge behind the line of scrimmage, then hit Partridge with a 25 yard scoring strike. McLearn missed the extra point, setting up Mercyhurst for another big home win. Seven plays later Rearick scored on a 1 yard run, the extra ponter was good by Wakefield and the celebration began. Rearick finished 29 of 45 for 273 yards. Former Shenango star Ricky Matthews ran for 92 yards on 19 carries. Powell ran 20 times for 89 yards for Notre Dame.

Edinboro 30     West Liberty State 14
Drew Herrell ran for 165 yards and a score as the Fighting Scots defeated the
Hilltoppers for the fourth consecutive time in the season opener. It was 9-7 Edinboro at the half, Alex Romanius kicked three field goals, Brandon Davis scored on a 30 yard run for West Liberty. D’Andrea Vaughn capped an 8 play drive to start the third quarter with a 1 yard run. Herrell followed that with a 61 yard scoring scamper. Davis scored his second touchdown for the Hilltoppers from 2
yards out to make it 23-14, but Brian Davis scored on a 21 yard run with 2:24 remaining in the game. Brandon Davis ended with 104 yards on 18 carries for West Liberty.

Bethany 28     Allegheny 7
Matt Grimard figured in on all 4 Bison touchdowns as Bethany rolled to the win in
Meadville. Grimard hit Daryl Powell with a 55 yard pass and Ed Holmes for a 6 yard
score, both in the second quarter. Grimard added rushing touchdowns of 11 and 5
yards, he ran for 69 yards on 19 attempts. Thru the air, Grimard was 11-18 for 232
yards. Eric Walker was held to 74 yards on 15 carries. For the Gators, Jordan Fowler threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Sean Griffin for their only score, Allegheny was held to 189 yards, while allowing 456.

Westminster 17     Hiram 7
John Proano ran for two touchdowns as the Titans open up the season with a win in
only the second night game ever at Burry Stadium in New Wilmington. The Westminster
defense forced 6 turnovers, including 5 lost fumbles. All of the points came in the first half. Proano scored on a pair of six yard runs. Zac Henry also kicked a 22 yard field goal. Brandon Hanna scored on a 3 yard run for Hiram. Hanna did run for 110 yards on 18 carries.

Carnegie Mellon 21     Grove City 19
Blaine Miller scored three times for the Wolverines, Patrick Blanks scored twice for
CMU, but it all came down to a missed two point conversion which gave the Tartans
the home win. After a scoreless first quarter, Jake Nardone scored on a 17 yard run to stake CMU
to a 6-0 lead. Miller answered with an 8 yard run to give Grove City the lead.
Blanks found the end zone after a 10 yard run, the two pointer failed with 1:06 left
in the half. Leading 12-7 coming out from the break, Carnegie Mellon added to the lead on a
Blanks 2 yard scamper. Miller scored with 1:59 left in the third on a 38 yard pass
from Clayton Hall. Kevin Donohue hit a 21 yard field with 8:44 remaining in regulation to put CMU up 21-13. Miller scored on a 2 yard run with 3:07 left to cut the lead to two, but could not
score on the two pointer. CMU recovered the onside kick attempt and made two first
downs to run out the clock. Hall ran 21 times for 100 yards for Grove City, he was also 10 of 12 throwing for 104 yards. Miller ran for 42 yards on 13 tries, he also caught 6 passes for 75
yards. Blanks led the Tartans with 17 carries for 125 yards, Nardone added 76 yards on 13
carries.

Bridgewater 20     Saint Vincent 17 in Overtime
The Bearcats led 17-3 with just over 10 minutes remaining but Bridgewater scored the
final 17 points to claim the home win. Saint Vincent jumped out to the early lead as
Morgan Porter kicked a 38 yard field goal and Mike Kale scored on a 1 yard run. Aaron Smetanka’s 1 yard run put Saint Vincent up 14, but Darren McKenzie scored from 2 yards out with 7:22 to go, and Carlos Gonzales hit Cassidy Burns for a 23 yard touchdown with 2:59 left in regulation. Saint Vincent drove to the Bridgewater 36 but turned the ball over on downs on the final play of the fourth. In overtime, Saint Vincent got the ball first, but Kale fumbled on the first play, giving the ball to Bridgewater. Six plays later Will Davis kicked a 23 yard field goal for the win. Kale ran for 119 yards on 30 carries. Smetanka was 18 of 28 for 190 yards.

Christopher Newport 12     Waynesburg 7
Marke Stovall scored twice as Christopher Newport held on. Stovall scored on the
first play of the third quarter with a 62 yard run, he scored from 1 yard out with
3:25 left in the third. Betrand Ngampa scored in the fourth for Waynesburg on a 72
yard run. Ngampa fumbled as the Yellow Jackets were driving at the Christopher
Newport 24, he ended the day with 19 carries for 102 yards. Stovall carried 17 times
for 170 yards for the victors.

Marietta 32     Thiel 24
Thiel ended the game at the Marietta 3 yard line, but could not score to have the
chance for a two-pointer. Andrew Keller threw two touchdowns to Kirby Harris in the
opening half, Kyle Shackle came on to throw two more scores, putting the Pioneers up
29-10 with 8:15 remaining in regulation.
Jared Soell led the Tomcats back, scoring two touchdowns in 46 seconds, hitting Nate
Houpt on 7 and 11 yard passes. Nathan Zarnoski kicked a 29 yard field goal with 2:15
left to put the Pioneers back up eight. That set up the late drive for the Tomcats.
Soell ran for 128 yards on 16 carries, he also threw for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Harris had 11 catches for 133 yards

Michigan State 28   Youngstown State 6
Fifth year senior Kirk Cousins threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns as the 17th
ranked Spartans defeated the Penguins at East Lansing on Friday night. YSU trailed
just 7-6 in the second quarter, but the Penguins were no match for the Big Ten
power. Kurt Hess threw for 126 yards and a touchdown for YSU. Jamaine Cook had 76 yards on
17 carries. For the Spartans La’Von Bell only had 40 yards rushing, but scored two
touchdowns.
