MSA SPORTS CUP RESULTS – Sewickley Kings of Single-A Again

Sewickley Academy is once again on top of the Class A standings in the chase for the MSA Sports Cup after leapfrogging defending champ Greensburg Central Catholic. In fact, the Panthers and Centurions have been tagging in for titles the last five years with GCC winning in 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 and SA claiming the Cup in 201–2011, 2013-2014 and now in 2015-2016. 

The championship for Sewickley Academy is the schools 9th in 13 years of the competition and was aided greatly by district and state championships in boys golf and boys tennis along with WPIAL crowns in boys cross-country and boys soccer.

Sewickley Academy ended up with 585 points while Bishop Canevin finished a distant second with 360 points and Greensburg Central Catholic third with 335 points. Vincentian Academy was fourth with 320 points and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic fifth with 280 points. The schools rounding out the top ten were Aliquippa sixth, Neshannock seventh, Avonworth and Shenango were tied for eighth while Serra Catholic was tenth out of 44 Class A schools.

The 585 points for Sewickley Academy was second overall of every WPIAL school, trailing only Quad-A champion North Allegheny’s 830 points.

The MSA Sports Cup is a challenge to determine the best sports programs for the entire school year throughout the WPIAL schools in each classification, A, AA,  AAA and AAAA.  Points are earned for the success of each Team sport in the fall, winter and spring seasons.  ONLY sports with at least 30% participation throughout the WPIAL schools are included.

Could this championship be the start of another four year run for Sewickley Academy? The Panthers captured the first four years of the MSA Sports Class A Cup before Serra Catholic claimed the 2007-2008 title. Then there was another four year run for the Panthers before the flip-flop trend by Sewickley Academy and Greensburg Central Catholic the last few years.
