Mohawk rolls past Apollo-Ridge softball in 1st round

After hanging with heavily-favored Mohawk in the rain through two and a half innings Monday before the game was postponed, things snowballed quickly on Apollo-Ridge when play resumed Wednesday.

Fourth-seeded Mohawk started the afternoon by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring 10 runs on its way to a 15-0 victory in four innings over No. 13 Apollo-Ridge in the WPIAL Class 2A softball first round at Hampton Community Park.

“We were disappointed that the game stopped on Monday, because we finally started putting some things together,” Apollo Ridge coach John Kinnamon said. “I asked the girls if they even knew it was raining because they were that into it. It wasn't bothering them. They had that focus that you try to get teams to have. But today Mohawk did what they do. They hit the ball hard.”

Apollo-Ridge (6-7) trailed 1-0 before play resumed, but the Warriors (13-1) had a dozen batters reach base in a row in the bottom of the third. Madison Shiderly had a two-run homer. Trinity Voss, Courtney Upham, Emilee Yargo, Ashley Young and Alyssa Young all drove in runs with singles for the Warriors in the third.

Tora Walters had a two-run triple in the fourth. Ashley Young invoked the mercy rule by singling home Walters.

Voss did not allow a hit in four innings pitched. She struck out six and walked two.

Apollo-Ridge had a season plagued by injury, but returns seven of its nine starters for next season.

“I was going through some of the stats the other day, and we haven't had a position on the field that we've had only one girl play there for every game,” Kinnamon said. “We had a girl with a broken nose, a girl with an ACL (injury) and a couple of girls with concussions. We'll get those girls back from injuries, and we have a good freshman class coming in, so I think the future is bright for us.”
