Mars, Shaler maintain top spots in latest WPIAL boys volleyball coaches rankings

A couple of teams in Class 3A changed positions as the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association released its Week 3 Top-10 polls and Players of the Week on Monday morning.

Shaler remained in the top spot, followed by North Allegheny, Seneca Valley, Norwin and Penn-Trafford rounding out the top five.

In Class 2A, Mars stayed at No. 1, but Ambridge, 2-0 in Section 1 and 2-1 overall, moved up in the No. 2 spot.

The Bridgers defeated this week’s No. 3, North Catholic, 3-2 in a key early season section matchup last Wednesday.

Latrobe dipped one spot to No. 4, and Gateway moved up one spot to round out this week’s Class 2A top five.

Because of the Eastern holiday, no tournaments were held Saturday, but four tournaments involving WPIAL teams will be this weekend.

Peters Township, Seneca Valley and Derry will host events Saturday, while Northeastern High School in York County also will be the setting for tournament action.

Every WPIAL boys volleyball coach has the opportunity to vote for each week’s top-10 polls.

The players of the week are selected based on submitted coaches nominations.
