A former state champion doubles team will face surprise opponents in the WPIAL Class 2A doubles championships at 1 p.m. Thursday at North Allegheny.
Top-seeded Emily and Lindsey Greb of Knoch, the 2021 state champs, cruised to the finals Wednesday, losing a total of two games in two matches. They defeated fourth-seeded Peja Cruise and Raven Karlik of Montour in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.
They will meet the 15th seeds, Sasha Hoffman and Stella Bossert of Greensburg Central Catholic, in the finals. In the first round, Hoffman and Bossert knocked off No. 2 Anna Mrkonja and Mia Woodske of Beaver, 10-7. In the semifinals, they won a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, over No. 6 Katie Hardy and Brea Kelly of North Catholic.
Hoffman and Bossert aren’t a typical No. 15 seed. They came into the section tournament as the top seed before falling in the semifinals.
The Class 3A bracket went according to seed with No. 1 Elana Sobol and Rachel Nath of Shady Side Academy and No. 2 Cami Fisher and Lily Sierka of Bethel Park meeting in the finals.
Sobol and Nath beat Franklin Regional’s Ellen Liu and Michelle Yan, 6-1, 6-4, and Fisher and Sierka defeated Abby Santora and Mollie Sclichter of Oakland Catholic, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals.
The top three finishers advance to the state tournament.
