Injured Canon-McMillan wrestler recovering after injury in WPIAL final

Canon-McMillan junior Skyler Adams was in school Monday, according to athletic director Frank Vulcano, two days after suffering an injury during the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling championship against Kiski Area.

Vulcano said he doesn't expect Adams to be cleared to wrestle in time for the PIAA team tournament, which begins Thursday.

Adams sustained a neck injury in a match against Kiski Area sophomore Nick Delp on Saturday. Adams was using a defensive move know as a bridge as Delp was attempting a double-arm bar pinning move. As Delp moved to a sitting position and secured the pin, Adams' neck violently twisted sideways causing everyone watching to gasp as Adams lay on the mat grasping his neck.

The match was delayed 30 minutes while trainers, coaches and paramedics stabilized Adams on a stretcher and took him to a local hospital.

Kiski Area heavyweight Isaac Reid went to the Canon-McMillan team bench and led a prayer for their teammate.

Canon-McMillan coach Jeff Havelka said after the match that he felt Adams would be OK. He had movement in all extremities.

Vulcano said Adams sustained a strained neck and pinched nerves.

Kiski Area defeated Canon-McMillan, 33-24, to win its second consecutive WPIAL title.
