Bishop Canevin closed out its section slate with an exclamation point on Thursday, as the Crusaders defeated Brentwood 3-1 to finish with a perfect league record. The homestanding Crusaders prevailed 25-18, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-11, which secured a 14-0 mark in Class 1A Section 3. With the setback, Brentwood fell to 10-4.

In a battle of playoff-bound teams, Bishop Canevin trailed for just one point in the opening set. Brentwood broke service to score first, but the Crusaders tallied 10 of the next 13 points to gain the upper hand. After a Spartans surge brought them even at 12-12, Bishop Canevin quickly regained the lead and never looked back. BC used a 5-1 run to close out the set.

The second set again included an early lead for the visitors, but Bishop Canevin pulled ahead 4-3 in the midst of a 7-2 run, and never relinquished its edge. Bishop Canevin led by as many as 11 points, and captured the set by a nine-point margin.

Bishop Canevin appeared poised to secure the straight-set victory, and held a 17-12 edge in the third set. The Spartans rallied, though, winning six straight points to take the lead. After the Crusaders deadlocked the score at 18-18 and 22-22, Brentwood secured the set by taking the final three points.

In the fourth and final set, the Crusaders showed their resolve, as they responded in emphatic fashion. Bishop Canevin scored a dozen points consecutively, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 16-5 lead. From there, Bishop Canevin cruised to take the set and the match.

The Crusaders received a mastadonic performance from sophomore Alexa Malloy, who paced the team with 27 kills. She was joined in double figures by junior Lexi Hall, who had 11 kills, while Ally Correa contributed eight and Kylie Airesman had seven. Airesman added four aces, which tied Maddie Maziarz for the team-high. Meanwhile, Tamara Blue, the lone senior for Bishop Canevin on senior night, also made key contributions.

In the defeat, Brentwood was led by Anna Betz, who had eight kills, while Brooke McQuillan provided five kills.

Malloy highlighted lessons her team can take from the victory as they prepare for a postseason run.

“It teaches us that we have to always stay on our toes,” she said. “We can never take anyone for granted, no matter how the game is going … we just have to keep playing our game and not focus on the other side of the net.”

Both Bishop Canevin, which was the Class 1A runner up last year, and Brentwood will find out their playoff fate on Monday.
