Hometown Softball Recap – West Mifflin Titans – 04/05/2017

In a true slugfest that featured 29 total hits, a pair of five-run frames keyed the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles to an 11-8 victory against host West Mifflin on Wednesday. As a result, the Golden Eagles claimed their first win of the campaign, improving to 1-1 in Class 4A Section 2 play, 1-2 overall. Conversely, the setback drops the Titans to 0-4 in section contests, 3-5 overall.

It was the Titans who scored the first run of the game, when Jaden Arcuri led off the bottom of the first with a single for West Mifflin. Following a sacrifice, Izzy Farmer plated Arcuri with a single to center field.

In the next frame, though, the Golden Eagles struck for five runs, as the first four batters all reached, and Mollie Alward did the most damage with a two-run blast. Keystone Oaks extended its advantage to 6-1 in the third stanza, as Abby Clasper led off with a single and later scored on an Alward single to left.

Both hurlers, West Mifflin’s Annie Modrik and KO’s Bri Butler, settled down for the subsequent two innings, as the score remaining the same until the bottom of the fifth. In that inning, the Titans trimmed into their deficit by scoring three runs.Tiana Sekowski began the rally with a one-out single, and scored when Lizzy Walsh followed with a blast over the left-center field fence. Casey Bornak continued the hit parade with a single, and she later touched home plate on a two-out single by Arcuri.

With their lead trimmed to 6-4, the Golden Eagles responded in the top of the sixth, as they produced another five-run outburst, keyed by a walk and four straight singles.

Trailing by seven heading into their final at-bat, the Titans never surrendered, as they staged a comeback bid. Kristen Davies opened the frame with a triple, and scored on Kira Kieler’s ensuing double. Arcuri walked and Farmer reached on a fielders’ choice, and both scored on a two-out single by Walsh. Bornak then followed with a single of her own, which plated Sekowski, who had previously been hit by a pitch. Wtih the tying run at the plate, Modrick popped out to end the contest.

West Mifflin next hosts Laurel Highlands in a non-section affair, before returning to section play at Carrick on April 11. Keystone Oaks, meanwhile, returns home to welcome Yough on Thursday.
